Godzilla vs. Baraguirus

Japanese Title

ゴジラVSバラギラス
[Gojira vs. Baragirasu]

More than forty years after the death of the original Godzilla, the nuclear leviathan's restless spirit emerges from the depths of Tokyo Bay and terrorizes Japan. This draws the attention of the present day Godzilla, as well as the quadrupedal Baraguirus - who in turn becomes the new host for the ghost of the original Godzilla. The possessed fusion then converges in a war with the modern Godzilla that threatens the entirety of Japan.

LOST PROJECT HISTORY

Following Kazuki Omori's Godzilla vs. Godzilla (Story Plan A), Toho monster designer and artist Shinji Nishikawa proposed expanding the kaiju cast with monsters outside of just Godzilla. While not many details of his version of the story are known, in terms of supporting cast, a new monster was set to appear: Baraguirus, a four-legged beast with aspects of both Anguirus and Baragon. While previous drafts had Ghost Godzilla possessing Little Godzilla, this one would have seen Baraguirus falling victim to possession instead. Nishikawa submitted this draft December 22nd, 1994.

Sometime following this pitch, the idea for a "Godzilla versus Ghost Godzilla" would be scrapped, with director Takao Okawara citing that three movies in a row where Godzilla faces off against creatures that resemble him (Mechagodzilla in 1993 and SpaceGodzilla in 1994) was simply too much.

Background and Trivia

  • The Ghost Godzilla render in the article picture is based off concept art of the monster by Shinji Nishikawa. The one for Baraguirus is an interpretation by Toho Kingdom staff. It was not created by Toho nor is it their official look for the unused character.
  • Details regarding Baraguirus can be found in the 2017 publication Godzilla vs. Destoroyah Perfection (ISBN: 4798615811).
  • The mention of Takao Okawara's opposition of making another Godzilla-themed opponent can be found in an interview conducted by David Milner in December 1995.
  • Nishikawa clarified in an interview with Toho Kingdom that, while Baraguirus had the traits of both Anguirus and Baragon, "it's not as though [Baraguirus] was born from an amalgamation of [Baragon and Anguirus]."
