Godzilla vs. Barubaroi (Nakano Draft)

Japanese Title

ゴジラVSバルバロイ
[Gojira vs. Barubaroi]

Multiple monsters begin appearing across the globe. In response, G-Force dispatches specialized submarines and a new Mechagodzilla to counter the monstrous threats. Meanwhile, the monsters not being engaged by G-Force instead target Godzilla for his nuclear energy. Admidst the chaos, a new kind of Oxygen Destroyer is created to bring an end to the rampage of all monsters, Godzilla included. However, the use of this new Oxygen Destroyer triggers the evolution of a small creature, which eventually becomes the deadly Barubaroi.

Barubaroi, the Oxygen Destroyer incarnate, has a body with coral-like properties. While originally small in size, multiple Barubaroi begin spawning around the world and start assimilating the other rampaging monsters, to include Anguirus Hound. These amalgamations then begin to converge and fuse together, becoming one giant monster that is both larger and stronger than Godzilla. As one massive beast, Barubaroi fiercely battles the king of the monsters, who has become its prey.

LOST PROJECT HISTORY

Influenced by Hideki Oka's Godzilla vs. Barubaroi proposal, assistant director Yosuke Nakano (referred to hereafter by his professional name, Yo★Nakano) created a variation of Oka's story, which also included fragmentary ideas that were discussed during planning meetings with the Kawakita staff group. While his initial proposal did not include Burning Godzilla, future revisions by Yo★Nakano would take into account Godzilla's meltdown and incorporate this into the plot in some manner.

Background and Trivia

  • The article picture featuring Barubaroi was colored by artist hea777 using Kaoru Kamigiku's black-and-white concept sketch as a base for use by Toho Kingdom. The colored look is an interpretation, and not Toho's official colors for the unused character.
  • Whenever a staff member's proposal was chosen to be the foundation for a new Godzilla movie, special effects director Koichi Kawakita would incentivize other members in the Kawakita staff group to create and submit their own variations of the planned work. From there, elements from these submissions would influence the direction of the main story. Whether during staff meetings or even if Kawakita himself thought of a new idea in his off time, the proposal would be updated accordingly. Including minor changes, Yo★Nakano wrote several versions of Godzilla vs. Barubaroi before the concept eventually solidified into Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995).
Special thanks goes to Yo★Nakano, who described elements of his version of the story with site staff. Sharing his personal experience while working on the VS Godzilla movies: "In addition to writing the story as a creator, it is also an important job of the assistant director to compile the ideas and records of other staff meetings and create materials."
