The site Wiiz has added a brief report on the three Godzilla: Unleashed titles for the Wii, PS2 and DS and its status in the European market. The report contains some screen shots of the PAL version of the DS game, which is noteworthy as not many were ever distributed. The key fact from the article is the release date of the games in the area, which are slated for February 22nd, exactly a month away now.

Some early reviews for the Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed have been coming in. Sadly, early word has been mixed at best on the title. Game Informer gave the game a 4/10, while Nintendo Power issued it a 5.5/10, citing unresponsive controls that led to a "button masher" like feel. Luckily, Play Magazine awarded Godzilla: Unleashed a more positive 8/10, though. Currently, these are the only three reviews present on the site, but more will likely be added soon in the coming days.

Gamespot has added a character battle feature to their site, where users can vote for the various monsters against each other. The feature includes a "Top Character" statistic, showing which are the general favored characters by voters, with Biollante currently holding the #1 spot with Kiryu close behind. The page also offers visitors a chance to be entered in a drawing in order to win a Nintendo Wii system.

Gamespot has added the sixth, and final, Designer Diary to their site. This entry, helmed by Simon Strange (Lead Developer on Godzilla: Unleashed) covers the single player mode in the game with emphasis on the fraction angle of the game play. The diary goes into the nitty gritty with how the fractions work, discussing that monsters can change allegiances mid-game depending on their actions. These actions are also documented in great depth in terms of how players can change their affinity with fractions, such as destroying crystals or protecting the local cities. The diary also reveals that each fraction has their own set of criteria for how allegiances can be swung, adding even greater depth to the single player experience than was originally anticipated. The diary then gives a sample as to how these allegiances might play out in a single player game based on the player's actions. Please head over to Gamespot to read the entry.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Atari's official site for Godzilla: Unleashed has been updated with new more monsters to the roster. What's shocking, though, is that these aren't the two monsters which were shown off on IGN earlier last week, which were Biollante and Orga, but instead are Moguera and the previously unseen Varan. Head over to the site to see shots of them and some brief footage of the two. The gallery has also been updated, showing shots of Varan, Biollante and Moguera in action, with impressive images such as this one.

On behalf of Toho Kingdom, I am sad to report that Simon Strange, Lead Developer on Godzilla: Unleashed, has left Pipeworks Studios, the developer behind the past three Godzilla games.

Simon was the sole connection between fan and developer. Often times, he would interact with fans on message boards such as Monster Zero, Gamefaqs, Godzilla.com and, of course, Toho Kingdom. Simon would use the boards as feedback as he worked on the Godzilla games and took every complaint, compliment and general comment seriously.

I met Simon while playing Godzilla: Save the Earth online back in November of 2004. We hit it off instantly and have been friends ever since. We never played competitively, but instead talked about the background of the game. He answered my questions as to why each monster was chosen and what inspired him for each move he gave the monsters. It was through these conversations in which I had the idea to do a full on, no holds barred interview with Simon about Godzilla: Save the Earth's background and he agreed. To this day, this interview is still talked about amongst fans.

In July 2006, I devised the Godzilla: Unleashed project for Toho Kingdom (although in a very different form) and it was Simon who got the ball rolling. He connected me with Atari Producer Keehwan Her and the rest is history! Without Simon, this project wouldn’t exist and I owe him a debt of gratitude for being able to bring it to Godzilla fans worldwide.

It's hard to imagine a Godzilla game without Simon. He was the driving force on three games, and if there’s a fourth his absence would surely be noticeable. In part, Simon Strange was responsible for raising the bar for Godzilla games for years to come.

We at Toho Kingdom want to wish Simon the best in his future endeavors and we will always be proud of our association with him and will be forever grateful for his contributions to the site.

Gametrailers has posted a new stage walkthrough for the Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed. The video, which is stated as being the last stage walkthrough, is presented by Pipeworks Producer Shelby Stair Wills and covers the Mothership stage. Previously seen in trailers, this is the first look at how damaged the craft has become, as it has apparently crashed in San Francisco. Wills also reveals that the stage will need to be unlocked before players can access it.

IGN has done another "monster reveal", this time showing off the character models and video footage for Biollante and Orga. Another log has been added to the Designer Diary at Gamespot, with this one coming from Lead Designer Simon Strange. This post focuses on the "fighting system" of the game, and gives a very indepth and informative look into the process of developing the control scheme for a Godzilla game on the Wii. The entry goes into great detail exactly what people can expect from the controls this time around, and how Pipeworks handled the hurdle of the fewer buttons available on the standard Nunchuk setup, compared with controllers of the past generation, and how motion control was incorporated. It also goes into detail about the "multi-tasking" abilities of the characters in the new game, and how the motion controls have allowed them to give players the chance to do several actions at once. It also talks about the addition of "health cells", working almost like in-game lives, and how ranged attacks, while still dealing a lot of damage, can not destroy a health cell, meaning players will have to close in to knock the opponent into their next "cell". The log also includes several screenshots along with it. Head over to Gamespot to read the entire entry.

An interview with Pipeworks has appeared on the Atari Community forums. The interview covers a lot of new information, including the fact that there will be no "summonable" characters in the game, as there were in the previous two entries, and that a "currency" system is coming back as the main means of unlocking new characters (a starting figure of eight was also given).

User "R0adie" has posted a snippet on the Atari forums from a recent G-Fan interview with producer Keewhan Her. Showcased in the magazine's 81st issue, the key comment from the article, transcribed by "R0adie", is included below:

"Godzilla Unleashed represents a leap in evolution in Godzilla games. The Wii version has 44% more monsters than Save the Earth (8 more than STE, 14 more than DAMM), including two brand new original monsters, five Toho monsters never before seen in any previous Godzilla game..."

The exact figure given seems a little off from what has been publicly known about the title to date, but we have ran the comment past Atari and they have confirmed its legitimacy. As many have number crunched already, this would mean 26 versus the previously given 23 figure for the Wii version. The five Toho monster comment, which is generally assumed to only be in reference to the Atari Godzilla games, is definitely hard to deduce with what we know... although technically Biollante, Titanosaurus, King Caesar, Mechagodzilla 1974 and Gigan 2004 already fit that bill. Does leave questions in regards to Varan and Battra, who were seen in the copyright, and how the PS2 exclusive(s) fit into it all, as the figure in the interview was for the Wii version.

Wii-volution has posted an interview with developer Pipeworks about the Wii version of Godzilla: Unleashed. Most of the information contained in the piece is stuff that has already been covered, but a few things are confirmed. In particular, the open confirmation that some form of cheats will be present in the final game. The differences between the Wii and PS2 versions is also briefly covered, and mentions that the Wii version will contain more monsters, although many suspected this to be the case when the "at least 20" figure was stated in the press release for that version. The page also mentions "power surges", which would be the first time this has been made in reference to the console versions of the game, as this ability was only mentioned for the DS title. Given the answer, though, there might have been some confusion regarding this and the "Critical Mass" dynamic between versions, or the latter has undergone a last minute name change.

As side note to the piece, and general musing on our part, it's slightly odd that the interviewer seems unaware that evidence of Biollante being in the game exists... yet knows that the game will feature three different Mechagodzillas.

Atari has added a listing of the PS2 version of Godzilla: Unleashed to their online store, which also includes several screenshots of the game featuring: Godzilla (2000), Anguirus, King Ghidorah and Gigan (Showa). The page also shows a very small image of the box art for the PS2 version, which is similar to the one for the Wii except that Biollante has been taken out and replaced by, what appears to be, the Millennium version of Gigan in the lower left corner (Update: as can be seen from the box art above, it seems this was changed to the Showa Gigan in the end).

Atari has loaded a second video to the site Brightcove, which features Mothra (Imago) and Kiryu battling. These videos provide the first listen of the announcer from the game, while it appears that Godzilla's name has also been changed back to "Godzilla 2000" compared o the earlier PAX build. The site also has the "trailer" found early on Gamespot, although with the title "Game Intro." The video is modified slightly, showing more footage of Obsidius and King Ghidorah fighting, along with a battle between Titanosaurus and Orga. Today was a strange day of... "non-updates" for Godzilla: Unleashed. Two videos were released, both were quickly taken down. One of them was posted on the Atari forums, and made the goof of including copyright notices for SpaceGodzilla, Megaguirus, Biollante and Orga at the end of the video. Consequently, it was quickly removed, although not before many saw it anyway. It has since been added again here, although with the "offending" copyright notices removed.

The second video was another walkthrough added to Gametrailers, this time focusing on the submerged Tokyo level. Why this was also removed is unknown. Unlike other walkthroughs, though, it ended with a short battle between Godzilla and Titanosaurus. The video also displayed the latter creature's oral weapon for the first time, which is, almost ironically, a super sonic beam that he emits from his mouth. Thankfully, Michal Shipman (naruto65) uploaded the video to YouTube for anyone who might have missed it.

Gametrailers has posted another new video for Godzilla: Unleashed, this one a two minute interview with creative director Mark Crowe. The video shows some more footage of the E3 demo in action, akin to the quality seen in the previous two videos, while Crowe is interviewed and elaborates on things like the controls and arena environments. There isn't much new in the way of information for those who have been closely following the game, but does provide a video source for those who might have glossed over some of the previous text interviews out there. To see the video, head on over to Gametrailers.

Gametrailers has posted 2 new trailers for Godzilla: Unleashed. One video shows a one-on-one battle between Godzilla 2000 and Megalon, and the other shows a four-way mêlée between Godzilla 2000, Megalon, and two GFW Gigans. For the sake of elaboration, the videos were recorded off a television at E3, as opposed to a direct feed. Apparently, sources are quoted as admitting that while these videos are great, they do not represent the game in the most superb manner possible (i.e. in the videos you could see someone adjusting the volume, background chatter was noisy, the camera was bumped, the picture appeared washed out, and the sound was hollow). The call for direct feeds is evident. Head on over there to view them.

IGN has posted an early, brief preview of Godzilla: Unleashed. To summarize, it seems as though that while the reviewers are apparently quite pleased with the aesthetic and nostalgic feel of the game, they had some complaints about the controls. No news on any new monsters.

Gametrailers has posted a new trailer for Godzilla: Unleashed, which will be featured at this year's E3. The preview features some footage seen before, coupled with a lot of new sequences, as Godzilla (2000), Kiryu, Gigan, Anguirus, King Ghidorah and Megalon are showcased. The trailer also features the first, although brief, look at the Gotengo, which can be seen firing at Godzilla a little past the 1:30 mark. To see the preview, head on over to Gametrailers.

Atari has produced a special poster for use at this year's G-Fest, as seen to the left and on the site's Images section. The poster will be distributed at G-Fest to 25 lucky attendees over the weekend (July 6-8) at the Crowne Plaza O'Hare International in Rosemont, IL.

In terms of the poster itself, there are several interesting things to note. First off, is the fact that it provides the first, although slightly limited, look at Mothra from the game. The design appears to have been updated compared to the Heisei one featured in previous games, and is now seemingly based more on the one seen in Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001) going from the outline on the poster. It is currently unknown what type of role the character might play in the game.

The other thing to note from the poster is the inclusion of Biollante in the copyright text at the bottom. This is fairly odd considering that the character is not seen on the poster itself, although neither is Megalon who is also included in the copyright. The character has already been seen in the DS version of the game, though, which this could be citing, as Santa Cruz Games (who is producing the DS version) is being credited with Pipeworks at the bottom. Several other revealed characters, such as Anguirus and King Caesar for the Wii game and Battra for the DS, are absent from the copyright as well... so one can only speculate what it all might mean.

Shelby Stair Wills, producer at Pipeworks, has added another entry to the Godzilla: Unleashed blog at IGN. The latest post focuses mainly on the staff's favorite monsters, along with a quick nod from one of the animators to their experience with Gigan in Godzilla: Monster of Monsters for the NES. The post also addresses several of the questions posted in the comment section, which in turn brings up some new details about Godzilla: Unleashed. Some of the bigger points brought up include the detail that the monster's health will regenerate during the course of battle and confirmation that the "mecha" subcategory name has been dropped in favor of the "Global Defense Force", which was showcased when Atari updated their site for the game. If anyone has questions they want answered related to the game, it looks like Pipeworks is paying close attention to comments made in response to the blogs. So head over to IGN's blog section to read the complete entry.

IGN has updated with a look at King Ghidorah, Anguirus and King Caesar, nearly a week after GameDaily leaked a glimpse at the trio. IGN, however, has new movies related to the three characters, showing off the character models in action. The site also mentions their allegiances, with Anguirus and King Caesar being "Earth Defenders" and King Ghidorah falling into the "Alien" fraction.

Lead designer Simon Strange has finished the second entry of the "Designer Diary" found at Gamespot. This one focuses on the new direction of "Rage" mode, hence forth called "Critical Mass". This game dynamic seems to have been heavily overhauled for the latest game, particularly in the visual department as the mode now gives the monster an appearance similar to that of Godzilla in his meltdown stages in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995). It is also mentioned how this new mode will work as a double-edged sword, compromising defense capabilities for the increased offensive power. Strange goes on to relate how this impacts the game's single player experience, mentioning how allies will often be lost in order to gain these new powers, offering a tough choice to players for how they wish to progress through the game. The dairy also mentions Power Surges, which are attached to Critical Mass and add on further powers such as immunities, regeneration or "finishing" moves. The diary mentions that these Power Surges are confined to single player mode, so it's not clear if this is implying that "Rage Attacks" (what they were previously called) are now excluded from multiplayer. For the full details, please head over to read the full article at Gamespot.

To go with the new addition to the "Designer Diary", a new trailer for Godzilla: Unleashed has also been posted. More news coming down the pipes, this time in regards to the release date. Gamecrazy has posted a listing for Godzilla: Unleashed that cites a November 20th, 2007, release date. Adding fuel to this report is another by Pro-G that lists the European release date for the game also in that same month, which Go Nintendo also picked up on.

According to Atari, though, the release date is still just "Fall 2007." Also, according to the firm, the box art for the game is not final, and that the image found on Gamecrazy is also "not it".

The "mock" box art has been included below, for those curious.

Lead designer Simon Strange has updated the blog at IGN for Godzilla: Unleashed. The post runs through more of the Pipeworks staff behind the titles, while also going into detail about some of their recent contributions to the game(s) development. The blog goes on to answer a few questions posted in the comment section. Of particular interest should probably be this remark in relation to skins in the series:

"Our monsters are all very carefully created by thousands of polygons, and individually approved by Toho. Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla 90's have totally different skeletons, and would never work with a simple texture or mesh swap out, such as you are suggesting."

It's hard to say from the way it's worded, but it could quite possibly be the first confirmation of the Heisei version of Godzilla being a return character. The post also includes one new screenshot showing the four previously announced Toho monsters fighting it out. Head over to IGN's blog section to read the story.

Also, a side note, Atari's official site for the game appears to be down, apparently in the midst of a redesign.

May 23rd is here on the East Coast, and Atari has updated their site as promised, right on the dot. The update doesn't feature much new information, except the bombshell that, currently, 23 characters are confirmed and slated for the game. The site also features a question mark filled roster, with four of the revealed characters present, each of which can be clicked on to start a small video and read a description. It's also interesting to note that the Millennium Gigan is being cited as "Gigan: Final Wars" here, while, as reported earlier, Kiryu is no longer being dubbed as Mechagodzilla 3. The site also confirms that Godzilla will be part of the Earth Defenders, Kiryu part of the Global Defense Force, while Gigan and, surprisingly, Megalon are part of the Alien fraction. Currently, "Magmouth" is not among the confirmed list, so it's not know if he is part of the 23, although his exclusion at the moment could also be due to the yet to be finalized name for the character.

On a side note, as many people are already picking up on, the site also describes "Godzilla 2000" as a female character. Now normally one might assume this to be a simple error or unintentional, yet it was stated a total of six times in the bio description. Only time will tell what, if anything, this might mean.

Update (May 23rd): Despite being mentioned nearly half a dozen times, the female aspect of the "Godzilla 2000" bio seems to have been in error, as the site has been fixed and now uses "he/him" to describe the character.

Lead designer Simon Strange has entered the first entry in, what promises to be, on an going diary on the development of the game. This first entry deals with primarily the story element of the game. The post goes on to mention how the narrative will focus on the human level, while the player can impact the direction based on their actions in game. Some of the most exciting details including changing the battle conditions mid-game, such as a one-on-one match eventually becoming a two-on-two bout depending on the player's previous actions. A rundown example of something of this nature included a encounter with Gigan, where Kiryu showed up, allowing the player to pick which side to fight on, which would also impact the encounter rate later on. Another interesting revelation is that, win or lose, the story will progress, while multiple endings seems assured for the title. For more details, read the full article at Gamespot.

According to QJ, the latest issue of Game Informer has some coverage of Godzilla: Unleashed for the Wii. Not many new details are presented, with the exception of one remark that, apparently, the game has no online multiplayer. The game's producer, who takes the reigns of the series after producer Kirby Fong stepped down following development of Godzilla: Save the Earth, has spoken out regarding the reaction to the original monsters. Included in his response is a confirmation that the names currently cited (Magmouth, Firelion, The Visitor and Lightning Bug) are, in fact, just "placeholders", despite no mention of this in the original article. He also goes on to cite that "many of the monsters" fans have been asking for are already included in the title, hopefully pointing at a more robust roster size than the earlier projections hinted at. He also closes with a vague, but reassuring, note that there are still "lots of surprises" and that they "don't want to give away ALL the cool info this early on in development."

More news on this, including hopefully who the new producer is, as it beaks.

GameTrailers.com has a user uploaded video of the game's demo that is being run at this year's New York Comic Con. Beyond being able to see more of the game in motion, the video also provides some new details, like the inclusion of the EDF (possibly from Godzilla: Final Wars), while Jeremiah Cohn, the game's producer manager, fields some questions about different aspects of the game. A lot of the details were previously known, such as the two original monster aspect, although Cohn does drop a "Holiday 2007" release date at the end, which would seem to indicate a late Fall release for the title.

IGN scored the first hands on impressions with the game, displaying both new screens and the first ever video of the game in motion. They also revealed a number of new facts about the title, including a rundown of the early controls established on the build, which featured different moves when the button attacks were combined with swinging the remote in a particular direction.

The article also mentioned that over 16 monsters are planned for the game, which is hopefully a very conservative figure considering that Godzilla: Save the Earth featured 18 playable characters, that will be broken into four fractions, effecting the way the story develops, that include: earth defenders, aliens, mechas and mutants.

Unfortunately, it was also revealed that the game would have two all new original characters. Toho approved or not, one can assume that just about any fan would rather see the time and resources it would take to flesh those two out spent instead on existing Godzilla monsters. If they were running out of characters to use, it would be an understandable development, but considering the rich array of monsters still left it seems like a pretty disappointing choice at this stage. If it was a monetary decision, stemmed from licensing fees, then there still would have been far better alternatives, like bringing other versions of monsters to the game like the Showa Mechagodzilla, the GMK Godzilla or Rainbow Mothra.

Varying reports for this one, which is in relation to the second annual New York Comic Con that will take place from February 23-25. As previously reported, Godzilla: Unleashed will be present at the event, although Gamespot indicates that it's now a non-playable demo of the game. However, IGN still hints that it might be more hands on, but this could just be confusion in regards to their wording of the release. Other sources that picked up the story indicate that the Wii and DS versions will be shown, but so far no mention of the PSP version of the game appearing. Hopefully more details will arise when the event goes live next week.

Atari's European division has released a press release for the title. Not much new information comes to light, except that the game will release in Autumn 2007 in those regions, and can probably be expected at around that time, or earlier, for North America. Furthermore, it sounds as if the Wii and portable versions might launch all at the same time, while the press release also puts strong emphasis on the "multiple story" aspect of single player mode.

Atari has officially announced the title, and IGN has the first look with four screen shots and an interview with creative director Mark Crowe and character designer Simon Strange. A lot of early details were revealed, including Nintendo DS and Sony PSP versions of the game, which could possibly share the same title across all three platforms. There are a lot of promising things mentioned in the interview as well, such as the title being built from the ground up for the Wii to take advantage of the system along with the promise of more detailed destruction. Some early aspects of the controls are also mentioned, including that it will support the remote and nunchuk, with the nunchuk being used for movement while the remote will be used to attack. According to the interview, this will make it possible to do several different actions at once, such as using a melee attack against a close quartered opponent while firing a ray at one in a different direction.

The four screen shots included also showed off four different monsters, which included: Godzilla 2000, Mechagodzilla 3 (Kiryu), Megalon and Gigan (2004). The snow covered cityscape in the shots also displayed the MBT-92 maser tanks and a number of multi-colored crystals, which showed off the game's fantastic lighting effects.

January 22nd, 2007
The game was first mentioned by the magazine EGM last year, in May of 2006, in their coverage leading up to that year's E3. The title was announced, although informally, as one for the Nintendo Wii by Atari. Months went by as not a word on the game surfaced, yet Classic Media (source) has broken the silence as the title appears posed to be on display at the Second Annual New York Comic Con. The title, called Godzilla: Unleashed, will be playable at the event in February of 2007, which could possibly be the first unveiling of the title unless Atari decides to make a more formal announcement before then.

Right now, details on the game are scarce, beyond its title and platform, although its expected to retain a lot of similarities with its two predecessors while developer Pipeworks is expected to return to the franchise for this outing. Stay tuned to the site as hopefully more information on the game is made available.
