| The seventh
disc in the set starts out with covering the other half
of Riichiro Manabe's score for Evil of Dracula.
Unfortunately, this is the lesser half of the composition,
as there is a lot of repetition and very few highlights.
The "Vampires Die-Hard" track is particularly
awful, starting off with what sounds like someone winding
a musical jack in the box, although at least the end with
the very traditional flute piece isn't bad. Thankfully,
though, this score is flanked by one of Manabe's better
compositions, which was done for Crest of the Wolf.
As to be expected from the composer, a few of the themes
here do go astray, but the good tends to outweigh the
bad overall as the "Main Title" is very pleasant
as is the rather whimsical "Masquerade Rape"
cue, however odd that might seem. The title song, done
by Jiro Sugita, is another nice piece that seems to grow
on the listener quickly, although his other song, "Ballad
of the Wolf", doesn't fare as well. It should be
mentioned, as the booklet makes sure to, that this soundtrack
is also available on the earlier release from VAP called
the Yusaku Matsuda Sound Memorial, which also
featured Murder
in the Doll House (1979). This disc rounds out
its running time with 15 tracks from Isao
Tomita's work for Prophecies of Nostradamus.
The selection here, though, is from the stereo vinyl done
for the movie, and not the original mono soundtrack. For
those not familiar with this, it really is night and day
from the music that was utilized in the movie, particuarly
the main theme which sounds even greater with the additional
channel redirection. It's also nice that this music, unlike
on Victor's previous release of the stereo score, is not
present in bulky 20 minute tracks, as it's instead broken
down into much more manigable track sizes; unfortuantly,
a couple of these seem to transition in the middle of
the song, particuarly the "Theme of Ruin"s,
and it probably would have been preferable had those simply
been clumped together as opposed to seperated. The second
half of the stereo score continues on the next disc.
