The fifth
disc in the set contains another two exclusives to the
SFX Champion release in the form of Jun
Fukuda's ESPY and Katsumune Ishida's Conflagration.
The ESPY coverage has the movie's score along
with one of the record singles, the first of which is
found on the previous disc. Composer Masaaki Hirao does
a nice job overall with the film, giving some nice themes
like "Istanbul" and the "News Flash Report".
The composition does have a fair bit of repetition, though,
as a good deal of the score is modified from the "Far-Off
Country" background track or alterations on the "Hypnosis"
cue. As for the coverage of Conflagration, it
contains the movie score by Hajime Kaburagi and the record
single tracks sung by Yoko Hashimoto. Overall, this score
tends to grow on the listener, as I didn't care for it
much at first, but repeated listening definitely shifted
that opinion. Hashimoto's vocal work tends to be the highlight
of this movie, and this disc in general. The rest of the
score is done well too, although there aren't a whole
lot of stand out themes, save "Jiro's Recollection",
but at least it's diverse and doesn't fall back on repeating
itself. Unfortunately, the audio quality isn't flawless,
as there is a crackle in the movie version of "You're
a Traveler" that occurs around the 1:47 mark of the
track. Thankfully, it's a isolated problem that doesn't
appear anywhere else on this score, and only occurs for
a split second, but sadly this is also the best track
on the CD.
