About PUBG Mobile

A mobile release of the battle royale game PUBG: Battlegrounds (formerly branded as "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds"), PUBG Mobile is a free-to-play PvP shooter where 100 players fight to the death until the last man or group is standing. With a shrinking battlefield, players have a limited time to gather resources and weapons in order to remain as the last one standing.

Alongside co-development from Krafton and VNG Games for the South Korean, Indian, and Vietnam releases respectively, the game was initially released on March 19th, 2018 for the Android and iOS. Since 2022, it has since amassed around 1.3 billion downloads and grossed over $9 billion according to an article from VentureBeat, marking it as one of the most played mobile games of all time.

Collaboration Overview

To promote the then up-and-coming Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), it was announced on May 16th, 2019 that Godzilla was coming to PUBG, with Toho and Legendary collaborating with Tencent Games and PUBG Studios. The collaboration consists of graffiti of Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and the Monarch logo, a tie-in comic, alongside a free, in-game Godzilla t-shirt and additional costumes.

A second collaboration came way following the release of Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) on May 11th, 2021. It featured a much more event contents, including additonal game modes, the Titans: Last Stand story event, new companions, another tie-in comic, and additional costumes.

Event Contents

PUBG MOBILE x GODZILLA

While not much was provided during the collaborative tenure during the initial event, on May 27th, 2019, the first chapter of a collaboration comic was released on the PUBG Mobile website, with illustrations by Drew Edward Johnson and Allen Passalaqua. Two additional chapters were released afterward, helping to promote the movie and the crossover event. Then on June 1st, 2019, additional costumes were added, themed around Godzilla and King Ghidorah.

PUBG MOBILE x GODZILLA VS. KONG

Featuring a more robust amount of content, more costumes themed around Godzilla, Kong, and Mechagodzilla were added. In addition, the Buddy Godzilla and Buddy Kong companion sets also accompany the player during game sessions.

In the Titan Strikes game mode, a derivative based on the Battle Royale mode, the player has the choice between 3 maps that host their own Titan; Godzilla for Erangel, Kong for Sanhok, and Mechagodzilla for Livik. Godzilla and Kong follow a designated route across their respective maps, acting as incidental hazards for the players, destroy enemy monsters, smash APEX facilities, and drop Titan Crystals for specialized use during a game session. Mechagodzilla is a stationary unit that is uniquely able to influence the Blue Zone, causing it to erractically shift, and is able to scan safe zone regions, marking the location of every player on the mini-map. Each map also hosts enemy superspecies for the player to deal with, notably including the Skullcrawlers and Rock Crabs emerging from underground.

Another game mode was made available for a limited time between May 25th to June 8th, 2021 for a second wave of the collaboration event. Mechagodzilla Attack has the player engage in a mini-game where they shoot 5 different monster targets; Rock Crab, Hellhawk, Skullcrawler, Warbat, and Mechagodzilla. Ammuntion is supplied by completing in-game daily missions, with the player able to achieve permanent rewards by completing the mini-games. They can likewise use Titan Crystals to call upon Godzilla and/or Kong to engage the enemy. Upon completion of the Easy Mode, it unlocks the Hard Mode variation, having the player beat the same 5 monsters but with more health and difficulty.

As a part of the second wave is the Titans: Last Stand story mode event, which pits the player and Monarch against Mechagodzilla, who intiates an attack against a Monarch fleet. The player has to shoot down a series of drones dispatched from Mechagodzilla's back, evade missile and laser attacks, and inflict damage upon the mech in the process. The second phase begins when the player escapes into a helicopter, operating a gatling gun in order to aid Godzilla and Kong in their battle against Mechagodzilla. As sequenced events play out between the Titans, the player must attack designated weak points on Mechagodzilla while having to contend with the relentless pursuit of drones. After depleting Mechagodzilla's HP, the Titans are able to defeat the mechanical monstrosity, parting ways until they are needed to defend the Earth once more.

Another collaborative comic was created, depicting and adapting the events of the Titans: Last Stand story event, with illustrations provided by E.J. Su. Their official account also released a motion comic version on their main Twitter (currently X) page.
