About Minecraft

Minecraft is a sandbox game by Mojang Studios that lets players explore, build, and survive in a block-based world. It has two main editions: Java Edition, which offers advanced modding, customizable servers, and exclusive features for PC, and Bedrock Edition, which supports cross-platform play on consoles, mobile, and Windows with smoother performance. Both editions receive frequent updates, introducing new biomes, mobs, and mechanics to keep gameplay fresh.

With procedurally generated worlds and an extensive crafting system, Minecraft fosters creativity, exploration, and problem-solving. Multiplayer servers enable collaboration, custom mini-games, and expansive community-driven projects, while a strong modding scene continually expands gameplay. With frequent updates, a dedicated player base, and limitless creative potential, Minecraft remains one of the most influential and best-selling games ever.

Collaboration Overview

Originating from an article by Linn Viberg on the Minecraft website, it was announced that Godzilla was coming to Minecraft on January 30th, 2024. The DLC collaboration was developed by Impress and Team KYO, both Japan-based studios part of the Minecraft Partner Program, launching on the Minecraft Marketplace for 1510 Minecoins, or $8.77 USD. A trailer was also released day-of, accumulating millions of views over time.

The Godzilla DLC consists of 8 skin packs and a pre-made world, with a movie theater-inspired hub that leads to 4 distinct minigames contained within. Each minigame takes influence from the various films across the franchise, including both the Japanese and MonsterVerse entries. In completing the minigames, the player can obtain tokens to use on a capsule machine, which unlocks an assortment of 3D statues, images, and monster bios, which can be viewed between the main lobby and a gallery display.

Event Contents

Upon downloading the DLC pack, an option is available to construct a New World based on the Adventure Mode presets enabled for the main game. In addition to this, there are 8 skin packs each based on different characters through the franchise. They include: Godzilla (1984), Kong (2021), Mechagodzilla (1974), Minilla (1967), Moguera (1994), Jet Jaguar (1973), Jia (2021), and Dr. Serizawa (1954).

After generating the world, the player (or players, if played with Minecraft Realms) spawns into an expansive movie theater lobby, consisting of a waiting room, the main hub, four branching Screen halls, the Collection Room, and an item shop. From there, the player can either approach the booth or the ticket machines in order to access the specific minigame; each player can only obtain one ticket at a time. Sprawled throughout the many hallways are posters of classic and modern movies of the Godzilla franchise, ranging from the Showa, Heisei, and Millennium-era films, with the addition of Shin Godzilla (2016) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) as part of the line-up (a promotional poster for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) can also be viewed in the item shop). Upon arriving at the theater, the player must right click on their seat with nothing in their hand. Alternatively, the player can also right click with the ticket in hand in order to fast-travel to the minigame.

There are a total of 4 minigames in the DLC pack:

Screen 1 - Inspired by Godzilla (1954), the player has to contend with 3 levels, avoiding the falling debris and blasts of Godzilla's atomic ray and reaching the level's end goal. In each level are the bonus puzzles, in which the player has to rearrange the colored tiles until all of them are matching colors, find a drill to free an NPC, and rescue another NPC with the use of fire extinguishers. These must be completed in order to acquire the Godzilla '54 statue for the theater lobby.

Screen 2 - Taking cues and references across the series, the player takes control of Godzilla '84 in order to combat 6 waves of giant monster mayhem. From friends to enemies, the player must dominate all monsters to obtain the high-score, with only Jet Jaguar as the recurring companion. The player must acrew 4000 points or more in order to obtain the Godzilla '84 statue for the theater lobby.

Screen 3 - Directly taking from Shin Godzilla, the player must repel the mysterious organism that has made landfall using an assortment of tools and resources, with the creature evolving with each progressing stage. In order to attain the Godzilla (2nd Form) statue for the theater lobby, the player must repel Godzilla successfully and use the blood coagulate on Godzilla's 4th Form.

Screen 4 - Loosely adapting scenes from Godzilla vs. Kong, this minigame has the player taking photos of the various encounters between Godzilla, Kong, and eventually Mechagodzilla in a titanic clash of epic scale. To claim the Godzilla vs. Kong statue for the theater lobby, the player has to take pictures of the holographic Hellhawks in the Monarch base, obtain all 20 photos for each of the 3 levels, and knock out the wandering Hellhawk in each level by snapping a picture of it.

Upon completing the first minigame of choice, the player unlocks the capsule machine, which requires the use of in-game tokens that can be collected by repeatedly playing the minigames. There are a total of 41 collectibles that can be acquired, ranging from in-game models to production stills, each accompanied with their own monster bios. Once all collectibles are acquired, the capsule machine will be permanently sold out. Likewise, when all the bonus criteria have been met, the final statue of Godzilla (4th Form) appears on the center podium, finishing the set.

  • Team-KYO's main website
  • Impress on the Minecraft Marketplace
  • The Official Minecraft YouTube channel
  • The Minecraft collaboration marks the first known video game appearance of "Godzilla (1st Form)" from Shin Godzilla
  • The font used on the Screen 4 poster utilizes the Japanese Godzilla vs. Kong poster font, notably including the katakana for "ゴジラ" and "コング" inside their corresponding character's names
  • Each of the hallways leading to the minigames host a wide variety of posters honoring the Godzilla series' long history; however, there are special omissions among the live-action films, mostly absent of GODZILLA (1998), Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), and Godzilla Minus One (2023)
  • Despite having a 3D model in the Collection Room, Hedorah's Final Form is not present in any of the minigames. On the flip side, Hedorah's Flying Form makes an appearance in the waves of Screen 2, yet has no trophy to collect in the Collection Room
