Platform and Release

Godzilla: Battle Legends is a Super CD-ROM² title. This means it can be played using a TurboDuo (PC Engine Duo) or the TurboGrafix (PC Engine) with the Super CD-ROM² add-on which were both made by Hudson Soft and NEC .

Although developed by the Japanese company Alfa System, the game was actually released first in the United States in 1993 as simply Godzilla. In this market the game was released by Turbo Technologies Incorporated (T.T.I.), a Los Angeles-based company made up of NEC and Hudson Soft employees to try and get a foothold in the US market after NEC Home Electronics USA failed to do so. For its Japan release, this was handled by Toho who launched the game on February 26th, 1994. They used the title ゴジラ爆闘烈伝 音楽集 (Gojira: Bakutou Retsuden Ongakushuu), which could be translated as "Godzilla: Bursting Battle Violent Legends".

*Note: Toho Kingdom elected to use a more streamlined translation of the title as just Godzilla: Battle Legends.

Energy Meter

Energy MeterEnergy is required to perform special attacks. Every time one is performed the meter, seen to the right, will deplete by different amounts depending on the move. A few grabs also require energy. The bar refills, slowly, whenever the player is not attacking or jumping.

To get a sense of the energy requirements for attacking, the playable character bios are color coded. Regular moves will appear in blue while grabs will appear in green. Symbols will also appear next to moves that require energy in the following manner:
moderate energy usage : moderate energy usage, continual energy usage : continual energy usage, heavy energy usage : heavy energy usage.

Basic Moves

While all the monsters control differently, the following two moves function largely the same across most of the characters and don't have energy requirements.

Block

Block (Hold Back)

A staple in nearly all 2D fighters, holding back in the game will cause the character, excluding the Super-X 2 and Battra Imago, to automatically block when the opponent initiates an attack. While blocking, the first attack made against the player is fully prevented while further damage received, such as in combos, is reduced.

Grab

Grab (Forward into opponent)

Pressing Forward while next to an opponent will cause that monster to reach out and try to grab them, bypassing block. While grabbed, the player can perform one of their throws, while the opponent, after a short delay, can conduct a throw move of their own if none has been started yet.
