Development

Circus Caper is a complete reimagining of the 1989 game Burn! Older Brother (Moeru! Oniisan - 燃える!お兄さん). The original game was inspired by the anime of the same name, produced by Toho and Studio Pierrot, and based on the manga by Kenji Terada. Aside from similar attacks and the boss fights, though, there is little resemblance between the two games. Key aspects such as the story, setting, level design, enemies, the final boss and mini-games differ significantly. However, because it was based on a previously released game, Circus Caper was never sold in Japan.

Story

Tim and his sister Judy arrive at the town-wide carnival and are captivated by the main attraction: the circus. Unfortunately, Tim doesn't have any money for admission. Luckily, a clown at the entrance offers to roll some dice to see if they can enter for free. After throwing the dice, the clown announces they've won, but he only has one ticket to give. Tim lets Judy go inside while he stays behind. As night falls, the nefarious Mr. Magic shows up, revealing that he has taken Judy. Without a moment's pause, Tim rushes into the circus to save her.

Items

In his quest to save his sister Judy, Tim can collect various items to assist him.

Hammer

Hammer
A lethal and simplistic weapon, the hammer is quickly tossed across the screen, horizontally, as it will damage any enemy it comes in contact with.

Soccer Ball

Soccer Ball
The soccer ball works like the hammer, except it's slower and travels across the ground, so it's unwise to utilize it near a ledge.

Brick

Brick
The only non-offensive item, the brick is used to create another step, and can be placed at any height. The item is incredibly useful for clearing some of the game's more difficult jumps, while it's also required for certain portions of the game. The brick will eventually disappear, though, so it's best to use it quickly.

Bomb

Bomb
Using the bomb item will cause every enemy on screen to die the second the explosive touches the ground. The bomb has no effect against bosses.

Yo-Yo

Yo-Yo
When Tim uses the Yo-Yo, the toy will encircle him briefly, damaging any opponent who might come in range. Because the toy can hit enemies numerous times while in range, the Yo-Yo is often the weapon of choice against bosses.

Stage Skip

Circus Caper is notoriously hard. Luckily, though, some lazy programming has left in a trick to skip the current stage/level.

Stage Skip

To perform this trick, the player first must have the "brick" item. Next, backtrack to the start of the area and place the brick near the middle of the screen, vertically. Now jump on the brick and then to the upper most left of the screen, over the "invisible wall". Doing this will fool the game into thinking that the player has used the area's exit.
