Toho has started a tradition of making more and more notable efforts around "Godzilla Day", a self-proclaimed day by the company that aligns with the anniversary of Godzilla (1954).

For 2021, the company annouced via a trailer that they were doing a Godzilla vs. Hedorah short film for that year's Godzilla Day. Directed by Kazuhiro Nakagawa, assitant director on Shin Godzilla (2016), the short would feature the suits from Godzilla: Final Wars (2004). This gave fans both their first real look at the two "Millennium" characters battling, as infamously Hedorah's role was very short in the 2004 movie, and as a way to celebrate Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), which was having its 50th anniversary.

The five minute short film, which was released on November 3rd, is found below:

Background and Trivia

  • Suit actors for the short were Naoya Matsumoto as Godzilla and Hikaru Yoshida as Hedorah.
  • In a series of tweets, Hikaru Yoshida mentioned that he considered playing Hedorah in a manner that was similar to his 1971 version, being more "slimy and eerie". However, after talking with the director, he opted for something that had more "clear movements", since this was the "Final Wars version" and to make sure the movements would be clear even on smaller mobile devices that might be watching the short.
  • A very brief behind the scenes video was released on November 1st, 2021:

  • The short features a variety of music from past Godzilla productions. This includes music from composers: Riichiro Manabe from Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), Akira Ifukube from what is believed to be Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) and Keith Emerson from Godzilla: Final Wars (2004).
  • Although Godzilla and Hedorah appear in the short sporting their looks from Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), the characters share no continuity with their interpretations there.
  • Below is the trailer for the short, which was released on October 20th, 2021:

The trailer is an homage to the Heisei series, using music from Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991) while having titles that match those of the Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989) trailer.
