Review

By: Joshua Reynolds (submission)

A unique repaint of Raymundo’s 2007 King Kong sculpt, this figure was released sometime in the late 2010’s. Renamed “Space Kong”, the figure was sculpted by Raymundo and distributed by Y-MSF, a small company that specializes in vinyl figures to accompany Bandai’s six inch line, often focusing on rare and more unknown kaiju characters.

Details

Standing at five and a half inches, Space Kong scales nicely with virtually all of YMS-F releases and Bandai Movie Monster Series toys. The entire figure is sculpted very nicely with lots of detail given to his fur. Raymundo didn’t skimp on anything here and even added Kong’s often overlooked nipples on his chest. The face is done so much better than the larger Kong Bandai released in the early 1993 and, thankfully, lacks that Elvis Presley-styled hair.

Articulation

Like most vinyl toys, Space Kong features arm rotation. The lower body is actually a separate sculpted piece and can rotate slightly from side to side, but this seems more to be a product of the connection rather than an intentional articulation seam.

Accessories

None.

Paint

And this is why I instantly fell in love with this release. While I still want to get some of Raymundo’s other Kong releases, I had to jump right at the chance to own this guy. The figure is sculpted in a bright green vinyl with darker shades of green and silver applied across the body. This paint job gives it the appearance of being nuclear and even glows in the dark, something you just don’t see in non-stylized sculpts very often. The ape’s eyes are, strangely, painted a dark shade of orange. I’d have personally rather have had them a bright yellow or blue.

Overall

A very unique figure that can fetch a pretty hefty price these days. Made in an extremely limited quantity, if one likes eye popping figures with great sculpts, you can’t go wrong here. Plus, you just don’t see many figures of the 1962 King Kong, even if they’re dubbed over a new name… Space Kong.
