Hiya reissues their already good King of the Monsters Mothra in the style of her character poster.
Details
The sculpt seems to be using the CG model as the basis and it does a pretty good job translating it to figure form in this scale. Obviously with this scale there is only so much you can do considering how the MonsterVerse Mothra has such a small body compared to her wings. But I think the sculpt of Mothra looks pretty great all things considered. My only real issue is that her antennae are a part of her head sculpt. It isn’t a huge knock on this figure as they would probably be fairly fragile if they were posable.
The real standout of this figure has to be the wings and they look magnificent here. It really makes me want to get the standard release, even though I dig this look. But yeah her wings look fantastic and are fairly representative of how they looked in the film.
Articulation
Not the most articulated figure in the line, but I feel it’s definitely a big step up over the Neca release. I really love how sturdy the wings feel on this figure. They aren’t as flexible as they could be, but again given the size of the figure and Mothra’s proportions, there is only so much you can do without making the joints really bulky.
Though the rest of the figure sadly does feature little articulation. The head isn’t posable, and while the limbs are, they have such little movement capabilities. Not a huge loss per say, but it could be an issue for those wanting to pose this figure fighting Rodan. Or in any sort of action poses, for that matter.
Accessories
Aside from the base and stand that attaches to it for displaying Mothra, there aren’t any real accessories. I appreciate the base and stand as it’s the only way to really display this figure. It still would’ve been nice if they weren’t so plain and generic looking. At the very least, I think it would’ve been cool to have Mothra in her larval form considering the price.
Paint
Paint applications on Mothra herself are pretty basic to be honest, as it's pretty much the one tone color applied to her entire body, with a wash applied to make the details pop, which certainly helps things, but it’s also not a big issue considering the figure is meant to look like the poster version. That said, it could’ve been applied better in places, at least on my figure.
The wings however appear to be pretty flawless, and again are the main aspect of this figure. So considering the size of the body on Mothra, it’s a pretty solid job as far as paint goes. Could certainly be better, but I’ve seen far worse on more expensive figures.
Overall
This is a pretty great and solid figure from Hiya. Definitely not perfect by any means, but for the money and availability it’s certainly the best option for fans. I do personally feel more could’ve been added considering the price of the figure. But I still think it’s a pretty solid release overall. Another nice addition to the Hiya line.
