For the 50th anniversary of the movie Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Bandai’s Tamashii Nations division brought the kaiju into the S.H. MonsterArts line. The figure was a P-Bandai release, and the release is three figures in one. They include Hedorah in his main bipedal form, his flying form and his tadpole form. The figure is sculpted by Jun Goshima.
Details
The main bipedal form has the issue of the cross-eyed stare although it some media, it’s the normal stare for Hedorah. The sclera of the eyes on all three figures is dark red in comparison to the orange on the suit itself. Aside from the eyes, the detail on the main form and that of the tadpole form are excellent in representing how Hedorah is truly a walking mass of sludge and matches well with his on-screen counterparts. In terms of height, it has a bad height comparison to the later release of 1972 Godzilla.
Articulation
As the main bipedal form of Hedorah is the key figure here, it has the main articulation features, and they mostly mimic how Hedorah moves in the movie. The arms have the most movement as they can move mainly up and down and sometimes from left to right. The head, tail, legs, and some of the lower sections of the front of the body can move as well. The flying form and the tadpole form have no articulation whatsoever.
Accessories
There are stands to portray the flying and tadpole form of Hedorah along with an underwater habitat form emerging stage piece to which the head of the tadpole version can be inserted into.
Paint
The coloring, which is dark gray, matches well with how Hedorah looked in the night battle on Mount Fuji although it lacks a glittery tint that is on the suit and that one would find on diamonds. The coloring of the tadpole is virtually a perfect match to its onscreen counterpart while the flying form is in the same situation color wise with the main bipedal form to a much greater extent.
Overall
After many years of releasing either Heisei or Millennium figures along with the Monsterverse and Reiwa figures, it is nice for S.H. MonsterArts to venture back to other figures in the Showa era besides the Godzillas. Furthermore, to get in a sense three figures in one product is nice despite the price. It’s an excellent release and the beginning of expanding the lineup of the beyond that of the Heisei and to a much lesser extent the Millennium figures.
