Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001), or simply GMK, is the third entry in the Millennium series and arguably features the most terrifying Godzilla since the original. This is a soulless, white-eyed monster of destruction fueled by the wrath of World War II victims. Hiya Toys is now bringing this "God of Destruction" into their EXQUISITE BASIC line as a PREVIEWS exclusive, and I was quite impressed with what I’ve seen so far.

Details

Hiya Toys continues to make a name for itself in the world of kaiju figures. This GMK Godzilla is one of the strongest entries in the range, perfectly encapsulating the divisive but unique design of the 2001 film. Coming in at 7 inches (18cm) tall, it scales well with other 6-7 inch figures. It looms over human figures appropriately and pairs consistently with other Hiya releases, certain S.H. MonsterArts (SHMA) figures, and even some Bandai Movie Monster Series vinyls. The chunky GMK silhouette makes it seem especially imposing when placed alongside more streamlined Godzilla designs.

Articulation

Head: The neck ball joint allows for decent rotation and some tilt, though it is somewhat limited by the sculpt.

Arms: Featuring swivel-hinge shoulders, single-joint elbows, and swivel wrists. They reach forward adequately for dynamic posing, though you may struggle to recreate a perfect "atomic breath charging" pose without compromise.

Legs: Ball-jointed hips, swivel thighs, single-joint knees, and ball-jointed ankles. The massive GMK thighs provide great stability, allowing for a walking pose without toppling.

Tail: Segmented with 5–6 joints. This is crucial for balancing a top-heavy figure, and Hiya executed this perfectly.

Hands: Includes one set of relaxed claws and an additional set of splayed, aggressive hands. Swapping is easy, though using a little heat (hairdryer) is recommended.

Overall, the articulation is great for grounded, menacing poses. You won't get him into a flying kick or a leap, but for a heavy, lumbering monster, it feels right.

Accessories

The figure is unfortunately light on extras. Aside from the alternate hands, there is nothing else included, notably missing an atomic breath effect.

Paint

The main body is a rich charcoal gray with a blue undertone that shifts depending on the lighting highly accurate to the on-screen suit. The dorsal plates feature the expected gradient from gray-blue to white, though the transition could be a touch smoother in places.

The claws and teeth are an off-white/cream color, which looks much more natural than a "toyish" bright white. Most importantly, those iconic white eyes that are the window to Godzilla’s possessed soul are painted with a clean, non-transparent finish that perfectly captures the character’s menace. While there is minor paint slop on the gum line and some slight rub on the plate tips from the packaging, the quality is well above the price point.

Overall

Buyers should manage their expectations: while this is part of the "EXQUISITE BASIC" line, it isn't trying to compete with the articulation of a high-end S.H. MonsterArts product. However, it is a massive step up from a standard vinyl figure.

Is it perfect? No. The articulation has limits and the accessory count is low. But if you want a representative GMK Godzilla that doesn’t require mortgaging your house, this PX Previews Exclusive is the way to go. It looks fantastic on the shelf, perfectly capturing the "evil white stare" that made this design a legend in the history of the King of the Monsters.
