To start off, I saw this piece at Wondercon in 2017 and instantly wanted to review it for Toho Kingdom and after traversing a sea of difficulties, I’m finally able to review the Art Spirits Gigan 2004.

Close Up
Close Up

This is one interesting figure to say the least. While it is Gigan from 2004 (with Scythe arms), the pose that it was given seemed to be out of the ordinary for the character - like he was walking on a catwalk in a fashion show. That aside, the pose works great and with such a highly detail sculpt, this one is a standout in the line. On the body, there are deep smooth grooves that feel great to the touch. The way the back-fins curl up around the figure looks awesome and it really adds to the menacing look of the figure. The visor is pretty cool as well with the lowered head position making Gigan look sinister, and I like how I can see the sort of honeycomb design inside. Do be careful handing this figure though as every point on this figure is sharp. Basically, if it looks sharp, it is!

Articulation

There are no points of articulation on Gigan. It's a single solid piece meant for display purposes.

Accessories

The stand, made to look like rubble, is pretty cool looking. To mount Gigan onto the stand, simply put the pegs in the holes of his feet and you’re good to go.

Paint

There’s no real paint on the figure since all the color comes from the mold. For what paint there is, it’s meant to add depth to the metallic portions and it works really well. Next up is the stand and black paint is added to the mold to add more detail and it looks pretty good. I would have liked a darker color for the top piece of debris that Gigan rests his foot on, but it’s not a big deal.

Overall

This is a really cool piece, and even though the pose is a little different than what you’d expect, it’s pretty awesome. Do be careful of the sharp points when handling, though. Very highly recommended!

Addendum: Gigan 2004 Limited Edition: Hyper Solid Series

Order

Outside of some key differences, this is the same mold as the Scythe hand version so there’s not a whole lot to write about.

Chainsaw
Chainsaw

The alternate to the Gigan 2004 (Scythe arms) is the 2nd form Gigan with the chainsaw hands, and it’s really the same thing but with the chainsaw hand, different armor for the neck and back of head, and the serrated horn on the top of his head. Everything else is the same. Same stand, same pose, everything.

Now, I do really like how the chainsaws look here. They’re pretty cool looking and the armor on the back of the head and the neck looks great.

Articulation

There are no points of articulation on Gigan. It's a single solid piece meant for display purposes.

Accessories

This figure comes with a rubble display base.

Paint

Like the Scythe hand version, the paint on the metallic parts are meant for adding depth and it looks great. The paint on the stand is the same as well. Nothing new here.

Overall

While this release is pretty much the same as the other, it’s still pretty awesome. It’s cool that you can choose between one or the other and there’s no real difference between the two, outside of the key differences. Just like the Scythe arms version, very highly recommended!
