Best known for her role
of Miki Saegusa in every single entry in the Godzilla
Heisei series, with the sole exception of The
Return of Godzilla (1984), Megumi Odaka started
out her film career in the 1987 film Princess
of the Moon alongside Yasuko Sawaguchi; coincidentally,
she was later forced to take second place to Yasuko
Sawaguchi in Toho's "Cinderella"
contest. The contest, however, placed Odaka in the limelight,
and she later landed the role of Miki Saegusa in Godzilla
vs. Biollante (1989). Before landing the role,
Odaka had never seen a Godzilla film before and was at
first afraid of the Godzilla suit until befriending suitmation
actor Ken Satsuma.
Although Godzilla
vs. Biollante (1989) failed to achieve box office
success, Toho was impressed with Odaka's performance
and asked her to reprise her role two years later in Godzilla
vs. King Ghidorah (1991), which went on to be
successful. She would reprise her role of Miki Saegusa
in all of the following entries in the Godzilla Heisei
series until its end in 1995 with Godzilla
vs. Destoroyah. She has said, though, that as
long as Godzilla films are being made she would "like
to come back and appear in them as Miki Saegusa." |
