July and August will be big months for Toho soundtrack fans, having both new and old releases to celebrate from King Records and also Cinema-Kan. This includes the score for the upcoming Godzilla Resurgence (2016) and a large collection of Masaru Sato scores.

Summer Toho Soundtrack Roundup: Godzilla Resurgence and Masaru Sato

The fun starts with a pair of Sato scores set to hit Japan on July 20th, 2016. These two CDs come from Cinema-Kan, who first popped on the radar for many thanks to their soundtrack releases of Vampire Doll (1970) and the rest of the the bloodthirsty trilogy. The label is now taking their hand at releases outside of the science fiction genre, although ones that will still be of interest thanks to Sato's involvement in the Godzilla franchise. This leads way to the score for the newest Godzilla film before diving into entries in the war genre.

Sword of Doom - July 20, 2016

Director Kihachi Okamoto's anti-hero film pushes the boundaries between what an audience will accept from a protagonist. Starring Tatsuya Nakadai, the 1966 movie focuses on a character that, in most stories, would be the film's villain.

As Nakadai's character goes around unremorseful killing, the production is set to the music of Masaru Sato. Given the time period, fans will see some minor similarities in a theme between this and Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (1966).

Kill! - July 20, 2016

Another film from director Kihachi Okamoto and starring Tatsuya Nakadai, this 1968 movie is an adaptation of Shugoro Yamamoto's novel Peaceful Days, which was also used as a source for Akira Kurosawa's Sanjuro (1962).

Continuing to push the envelope for the genre, Okamoto constructs the film as a parody of the genre with Sato along for the ride, who was the original composer of Kurosawa's take on the story.

Godzilla Resurgence - July 30, 2016

Arriving the day after the film hits theaters comes the score for the 2016 Godzilla movie: Godzilla Resurgence.

Composed by Shiro Sagisu, best known for his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion and more recently for Attack on Titan (2015), the production looks to take a more gothic approach to the character. By intent or coincidence, the cover to the soundtrack seems to mimic the headshot approach used for the Godzilla Soundtrack Perfect Collection releases.

Battle of the Japan Sea - August 10, 2016

One of Toho's most famous war films, the 1969 Battle of the Japan Sea boasts a huge ensemble cast headed by Toshiro Mifune.

The score, composed by Sato, is rousing while genre fans will recognize at least one theme for its use in the Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) trailers. This score was already represented with 9 tracks on the War History of Men - Toho War Movies Soundtrack Collection. This, however, marks the first time the score will get a more fleshed out, dedicated release on CD.

Japan's Longest Day - August 10, 2016

Last on the docket is another war film and also the third in the summer release schedule to have been directed by Kihachi Okamoto. Another mammoth ensemble production, the 1967 Japan's Longest Day gives a suitably grim retelling of August 14th, 1945, when Japan surrendered during World War II.

Like Battle of the Japan Sea, this Sato score was also represented on the War History of Men - Toho War Movies Soundtrack Collection, although this time with 8 tracks. This release marks the first dedicated CD release of the soundtrack.
