  • Based on Kobo Abe's 1962 novel of the same name, Woman of Sand (砂の女 - Suna no Onna).
  • Teshigahara Productions submitted the film to the US copyright office on June 9th, 1997 with the registration number of PA0000866810. The movie was submitted under its Romaji title, Suna no Onna, and its international title, The Woman in the Dunes. An additional document related to the claim was submitted under the registration number of V8003P166. This second claim cited both the international title, The Woman in the Dunes, along with an alternate: The Woman of the Dunes.
