Background and Trivia

  • Takarazuka Eiga Company submitted the movie to the US copyright office on May 1st, 1991 under the registration number PA0000528435. It used the titles Whirlwind and Daitatsumaki, the former being the international title and the latter the short version of the Romaji title.
  • Based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Norio Nanjo.
  • Director Hiroshi Inagaki and Special Effects Director Eiji Tsuburaya were both working on multiple projects at the same time as this film. As a result, the two were unable to adquetly meet as frequently as they needed to in order to discuss details in the movie. One such instance was what direction the titular tornado was intended to move in various scenes that they were both working on. As fate would have it, they ended up having the same idea on the direction and path of the tornado. Noted in Japanese Special Effects and Fantasy Films Complete Works (ISBN: 4766927060).
  • The tagline for the movie is: "Running across the battlefield, a tremendous tornado that blows away both men and horses!" (人馬もろとも吹きとばし戦野を疾る凄絶の大龍巻!).
