Background and Trivia

  • Hideaki Anno, director of Shin Godzilla (2016) and the Evangelion series, previously worked with director Hayao Miyazaki on the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984. Anno's role on the 1984 production was to assist with directing the animation process itself. Hearing of The Wind Rises, Anno and producer Toshio Suzuki had a conversation about him directing some of the animation, with interest expressed specifically on the Zero fighter plane. To Anno's surprise, following conversations between Suzuki and Miyazaki, he was instead approached about voicing the main character in the film. Noted in volume 91 of Bungeishunju.
  • Hideaki Anno later reflected about the amount of involvement in playing the lead versus what he was pitched. When director Hayao Miyazaki first approached him he cited the role as: "He's a quiet guy and doesn't have many lines." Anno notes: "I believed that and accepted the job, but when I saw the storyboard, I was surprised. He was talking all the time, there was singing, and there was also French and German, so I was completely fooled!'' Discussed in Mynavi.
