Background and Trivia

  • Toho submitted the film to the US copyright office on December 29th, 1997 with the registration number of V8007P207. The movie was submitted under its international title, The Surf, along with a Romaji title, Shiosai. This was a joint registration that also included Invisible Man (1954), Sound of the Mountain (1954) and Late Chrysanthemums (1954).
  • Adapted from Yukio Mishima's novel of the same name (潮騒 - Shiosai). The novel, released on June 10th, 1954, came out just 132 days before the film did.
  • Yukio Mishima's novel was later adapted again for the movie The Sound of the Waves (1975).
