Background and Trivia

  • During the "Behind the Studio: Origins of Tales from Earthsea" extra found on Disney's DVD release, Hayao Miyazaki long expressed an interest in making a movie adaptation of Earthsea and had considered it during the 1980's. Eventually, though, he decided to adapt Nausica√§ of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga that he released in 1982. Perhaps by chance or after hearing about this, author Ursula K. Le Guin sent a letter to Hayao saying that: "if anyone were allowed to make an animated Earthsea film, it should be directed by [him] as a Studio Ghibli production." However, Studio Ghibli desired for Goro Miazaki, Hayao's son, to take the project instead. As a result, Hayao flew to meet with the author to make this request, and was successful in securing the project for his son.
