Background and Trivia

  • During the "Behind the Studio: Origins of Tales from Earthsea" extra found on Disney's DVD release, Hayao Miyazaki long expressed an interest in making a movie adaptation of Earthsea and had considered it during the 1980's. Eventually, though, he decided to adapt Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga that he released in 1982. Perhaps by chance or after hearing about this, author Ursula K. Le Guin sent a letter to Hayao saying that: "if anyone were allowed to make an animated Earthsea film, it should be directed by [him] as a Studio Ghibli production." However, Studio Ghibli desired for Goro Miazaki, Hayao's son, to take the project instead. As a result, Hayao flew to meet with the author to make this request, and was successful in securing the project for his son.
