In Tokyo Bay the Japan Coast Guard finds a mysterious pleasure boat adrift, empty of all inhabitants. Just then, as the Coast Guard is still exploring the ship, the water begins shaking, and a huge underwater explosion takes place, causing a cave in at an underground highway, and widespread panic. Soon a bizarre monster appears and runs amok in Tokyo. The Japanese government is shocked and, while a number of helicopters are called out by the JSDF, the prime minister does not allow them to fire, and the bizarre monster escapes back into the sea. Japan is at a loss as to how to respond when Kayoko Ann Paterson, an American who represents the United States government, appears with information about the monster, which she calls Godzilla. The Americans are now offering to work with the Japanese to deal with this enormous threat. When Godzilla appears again, he is more powerful than ever, and the combined might of the JSDF and American bombers cannot stop him as he wreaks havoc across Tokyo, razing the city to ruins before going dormant in the middle of the city. The UN, led by the United States, determines that Godzilla will awaken in 360 hours, and unilaterally decide to nuke the monster before that happens, effectively giving Tokyo two weeks to evacuate the population before doomsday. However, the Japanese, led by the clever Rando Yaguchi, desperately search for an alternate means to destroy Godzilla without atomizing Tokyo in the process. Can they find a way to destroy the mysterious, awesomely powerful monster before it's too late?

Background and Trivia

  • Features two versions of the Toho logo before the movie begins. One is the modern logo and the second is the color one that was used during the 1960's and 1970's.
  • The release gap between Shin Godzilla and the previous Godzilla film from Toho, Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), is the largest to date. It marks almost 12 years, surpassing the previous "record holder" with the 9 years between Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) and The Return of Godzilla (1984).
  • Features stock music by Akira Ifukube from seven other Toho films. These other sources include: Godzilla (1954), Battle in Outer Space (1959), King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962), Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964), Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965), Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993).
  • Is the first Toho Godzilla film not to be produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka or Shogo Tomiyama. It's also the first to be produced jointly with another company, in this case Cine Bazar.
  • Although Funmation Films went with the title of "Shin Godzilla" for release, a title of "Shin Godzilla (Godzilla Resurgence)" with the international title in parenthesis was often utilized. This includes on sites like Fandango and the ticket stubs given after purchase. When we interviewed Paul Fruge´, Brand Manager at Funimation Films, he noted "Godzilla Resurgence is a very US type term, however since we do license this from Toho the producer and director said change it to Shin Godzilla so that was a very easy decision." Toho's eventual preference for the name Shin Godzilla was spelled out when Godzilla.com was relaunched and used this name alongside Toho's other preferred names for the Godzilla films.
