Background and Trivia

  • Bandai and Gainax submitted the movie to the US copyright office on September 25th, 1989. The titles used on the application were Space Quest, Quest at Oasis and Oasisu no Tsubasa. Space Quest is the original title used for the movie's very limited release in the United States in 1987, premiering a month before the film's Japanese release in fact. Quest at Oasis seems to be an unused title, while the last title of Oasisu no Tsubasa seems to be a modified version of the last part of the Romaji title. Oddly, it seems to remove Honneamise (Oneamisu) and instead add in oasis here, as if the original Japanese title was just "Wings of Oasis". It's not clear if any of these titles were intended to be the international title.
  • Toho asked if 40 minutes could be cut from the film in order to increase the number of screenings, therefore boosting the chance of a larger box office haul. The idea was met with hostility from producer Toshio Okada who later recounted that he told Toho: "If you want to cut the film, cut my neck!". This is noted in the book Otaku Amigos (ISBN: 4797302186).
