Rica escapes from Aiyu, a juvenile reformatory, and returns to her hometown of Yokohama. Shortly after arriving, she rescues a black woman and her daughter Jun, who had tried to end their lives by jumping into the sea. As Rica gets to know Jun, she discovers the young girl harbors deep resentment toward her mother, for causing her to be of mixed heritage. However, Jun and Rica are threatened when they become targets of Gonta, a man who persecutes foreigners and those with mixed descent, along with his gang. Despite Rica's attempts to thwart them, the gang ultimately kidnaps Jun with plans to sell her to an interested buyer...

Background and Trivia

  • Toho registered the film with the US copyright office on December 20th, 2001 under registration number PA0001089835. Interestingly, the movie was registered with only its Romaji title of "Konketsuji Rika: Hamagure Komoriuta".
  • Based on the Rica manga by Taro Bonten, first started in 1969.
  • When Media Blasters first announced the DVD release of the first Rica movie, it referenced the sequels as Rica: Lonely Wanderer (1972) and Rica: Juvenile's Lullaby. However, when the movies were released on DVD the first part of the title was changed to "Rica 2" and "Rica 3" respectively. It's assumed, although not confirmed, that the titles without the numbers are Toho's preferred English titles for the movies.
