Background and Trivia

• Toho registered the movie with the US copyright office March 30th, 1987 under the registration number PA0000355137. The titles used were the international title, The Retreat From Kiska, and a shortened Romaji title with a typo in it, "Taikeiyo Kiseki no Sakusen" when it should be Taiheiyo Kiseki no Sakusen.
• For the scene where the ships travel around Kiska island through the thick fog, special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya spent two months in an indoor stage to achieve this. A plan to film it outdoors, such as with the giant pool on the Toho lot, was abandoned due to difficulty with controlling the fog when outside. Noted in Complete Collection of Japanese Special Effects and Fantasy Movies (ISBN 4766927060).
• Despite releasing in the mid-1960's, the movie is in black and white. This allowed it to borrow footage from an earlier black and white Toho film: Submarine E-57 Never Surrenders (1959).
• Special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya won five technical achievement awards from the Japan Movie Association. One was for his combined work on Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) and The Retreat from Kiska. Cited in Japan's Favorite Mon-Star (ISBN: 1550223488)
