Strange organisms begin to appear in the waters off Okinawa. Starfish-like in appearance, these creatures called Barem begin to viciously attack the nearby populace, able to fire an acidic liquid that can burn those who come in contact with it. The Elias, Lora and Moll, investigate while befriending a group of children that have recently discovered a small creature of their own called Ghogo. The Elias begin to realize the source of the Barem: Dagahra, an ancient beast created by a lost civilization called Nilai-Kanai. Originally intended to be a guardian of the sea culture through pollution purification, the giant Dagahra quickly turned on its creators and wiped them out. Realizing that Ghogo is also from this civilization, the Elias rush to find a solution as they call on Mothra to defend against the monster...

Background and Trivia

  • Toho submitted the film to the US copyright office on March 30th, 1998 with the registration number of PA0000894359. The movie was submitted under its international title, Rebirth of Mothra II, and a shortened version of its Japanese title, Mothra 2.
  • Although Toshiyuki Watanabe returned to compose the music for the film, he was occupied with the NHK television series Mori Motonari. As a result, Watanabe enlisted Kan Sawada, who would later compose the music for Godzilla Singular Point (2021), to handle the orchestration of the score. This is mentioned in Toho SF Special Effects Movie Series Vol. 12 (ISBN: 4924609692).
