In Hokkaido, a project, involving deforestation, uncovers ancient ruins. These ruins, created by a species known as the Elias, were used to seal away a prehistoric evil: Desghidorah. Unaware of the significance of the area, site director Yuichi Goto removes the seal. Taking it home with him, he gives the artifact as a present to his daughter. Later, one of the surviving Elias, Belvera, arrives at the house to take control of the seal. Her intentions are sinister, though, as she wants to release Desghidorah to wreak havoc on humanity. Her benevolent sisters, Moll and Lara, arrive to try and stop her. Despite befriending the girl's brother and mother, they are eventually unsuccessful. Using the seal, Belvera releases the three-headed demon Desghidorah. Realizing the grim situation, Moll and Lara call to Mothra. The guardian of the Elias, who recently birthed an egg, arrives ready to duel with its three-headed adversary...

Background and Trivia

  • In advance of the movie's Japanese release, Toho actually submitted the film to the US copyright office on November 25th, 1996 with the registration number PA0000790667. Four different titles were included as part of the registration, showing uncertainty in terms of what the international title was going to be at this stage. The titles were: Mothra, Mothra II, Mothra vs. Desghidorah and Mothra Resurrected (typo of Mathra in the filing). Almost a year later, on October of 1997, Toho submitted a new filing for the film with the registration number PA0000866947. This one used the now defined international title of Rebirth of Mothra, although included Mothra and Mothra II as title variants.
