Background and Trivia

  • Tokuma Shoten submitted the film to the US copyright office on December 2nd, 1994 with the registration number of PA0000735608. The title used was the international title Pom Poko, the Great Raccoon Battle and a shortened Romaji title of Heisei Tanukigassen.
  • When it was re-released as part of Fathom Events on June 15th, 2018 in the United States, it had the distinction of being the worst performing "opening" weekend for theater owners from a movie in over 600 theaters. The reason being is that it earned just $147 per theater that weekend. That record includes both new releases and re-releases, although in the case of Pom Poko, the Great Raccoon Battle this was actually the first time the movie had recieved a wide theatrical release in the US after being available on home video for over a decade in the country. This record fell a few months later, on August 31st, 2018, when the re-release of the 1993 TriStar movie Rudy earned just $130 per theater.
