In a world where powerful Pokémon run loose, people train from an age of ten to become Pokémon trainers. Nine year old Satoshi from Masara Town dreams of becoming a Pokémon master, eagerly awaiting his birthday. Upon becoming ten, the boy will be old enough to start training. At this age, the first step in his journey will be to receive his very first Pokémon from professor Yukinari Okido. Unfortunately, on the morning of his birthday, the boy sleeps in. Late to Okido's laboratory, almost all of the Pokémon are already gone. The only remaining one is a Pikachu, who doesn't care for Satoshi much despite the boy's enthusiasm. Later on, though, the two are attacked by a huge swarm of Spearow. Protecting Pikachu, the two bond from the incident. After escaping, the pair witness a giant Pokémon, Ho-Oh, flying overhead. A rainbow feather from the bird is located, as Satoshi vows to find this Pokémon as they set out on their journey...

Background and Trivia

  • The movie commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon anime, which started in 1997. It is a loose retelling of the Indigo League story, the first in the Anime which covered the original Game Boy games.
  • In an interview on Yahoo Japan, movie editor Kunihiko Yuyama notes that not only is Satoshi (Ash Ketchum) ten years old in the film, but that the character does not age through his subsequent adventures. He is "eternally 10 years old".
  • When dubbed in English, the characters are given vastly different names. In this version:
Satoshi is known as Ash Ketchum
    Musashi is known as Jesse
    Kojiro is known as James
Professor Yukinari Okido is known as Professor Samuel Oak
    Sakaki is known as Giovanni
    Souji is known as Sorrel
