Background and Trivia

  • The movie debuted at the Festival de Cannes on May 17th, 2023. This was ahead of its June 2nd, 2023 release in Japan. In addition, Monster won the best screenplay award at the festival. A full list of winners can be found here.
  • The production won the Queer Palm 2023, which is a selected by a jury to reward a short movie or a feature film at Festival de Cannes that deals with LGBT+ and challenging gender norms.
  • Composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, a prolific artist whose past work also includes soundtracks like The Adventures of Chatran (1986) and Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise (1987), passed away in March of 2023 after a long battle with cancer. Sadly, he passed away before Monster was released that featured his soundtrack, that includes both new and old music.
