The brother of a paranoid shogun is falsely accused of sedition by one of the general's trusted advisors. Fleeing to the north with six retainers disguised as itinerant priests, they come across the first of several barriers on their long and arduous trek. Benkei, the bodyguard of the shogun's brother, ultimately finds himself in the unenviable position of having to spin an ever more complex web of deception to convince the steward of the Kaga province of their ruse. Along the way, they pick up a porter whose comical goofiness may hide his true worth, for he could prove far more valuable than they initially surmised...
