Background and Trivia |
- Adapted by Kobo Abe from his novel of the same name (燃え尽きた地図 - Moetsukita Chizu), although it's often translated as The Ruined Map for various English releases.
- In the 1970s, Toho formed a close working relationship with Shintaro Katsu's Katsu Productions, signaling a move away from Katsu's previous work with Daiei. This collaboration saw Toho distribute several of Katsu Productions' films, including Zatoichi in Desperation (1972) and the Hanzo the Razor series. On July 29th, 1985, Toho formalized this partnership by entering into an agreement to acquire rights to Katsu Productions' existing media library. After Shintaro Katsu's passing in 1997, Toho submitted this agreement to the US Copyright Office under record number V3474D496. The filing confirmed Toho had obtained rights to 31 titles, though The Man Without a Map was not explicitly listed as only 16 titles were referenced by name.
- The film's original Japanese opening sequence is believed to have been lost after its theatrical run in Japan. As a result, home video and television releases within the country have used the international version of the opening, which features the English title "The Man Without a Map" and English-language credits. Notably, these versions also replace the original Daiei logo with Toho's, reflecting the distribution arrangement that began after 1985. However, it's worth noting that the Katsu Productions logo wasn't also added for these more modern releases, though the film is still credited as a "Katsu Production" in the English text.
