On Christmas Eve 1991, Yuko Nando and Ginko Kanae run into each other. The two open up about struggles in their current life. For Nando, she has been unable to become a successful manga artist, while Kanae is stuck in an unhappy marriage. The two exchange contact details as they go their separate ways. The very next day, Nando collapses while attending a golf tournament sponsored by a publishing company. She suddenly passes away, and Kanae makes an effort to attend her funeral. After attending, though, Kanae herself perishes on the way back home. However, Nando is actually alive, but finds herself having traveled back in time to 1981. After the shock subsides, Nando decides to capitalize on this opportunity to become a successful manga artist. Using her future memories, Nando ends up creating compelling work, altering her old reality. After making a name for herself, Nando receives a threatening letter accusing her of plagiarism. Background and Trivia

  • The film does not appear to be registered with the US copyright office, although does appear to have an English international title. This was listed as "Last Christmas" in the book Distributed by Toho Special Effects Movies 1954-1994 (ISBN: T1065429631982).
  • Based on the 1991 manga "Future Memories" (未来の想い出 - Mirai no Omoide) by Fujiko F. Fujio. The original writer also appears in the film as the Fortune Teller.
  • In the original story, the main protagonist is named Masato Nando rather than Yuko Nando and is male. Quite a few other details are changed as well, including that the time jump is more dramatic from 1991 to 1971.
  • Although only distributed by Toho, the poster does display the Toho 60th anniversary emblem. Other films to carry this emblem include Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), Au Revoir, Heiji (1992) and Porco Rosso (1992).
