On an expedition to Mondo Island, the submarine Explorer makes a startling discovery: a giant ape called King Kong living amidst a land that time forgot. The mammal battles it out with Gorosaurus and a Giant Sea Snake before the crew of the Explorer say farewell to Kong and return to New York to state their discovery. Meanwhile, Dr. Who, in a bid to find a way to mine Element X, hears of the discovery of the legendary creature. Having already constructed his own version, Mechani-Kong, Dr. Who seeks to kidnap the real Kong in hopes he will be more successful at securing Element X...

  • Universal Pictures submitted the movie to the US copyright office on August 21st, 1968 under the registration number LP0000037134. It used the title King Kong Escapes . On September 29th, 2003, Toho submitted a renewal registration for the movie, using the title King Kong Escapes and a close proximation of its Romaji title, King Kong no Gyakushu.
  • Commemorated Toho's 35th anniversary, which is noted before the movie starts and on the film's poster.
  • Was re-released in 1973 in Japanese theaters as part of the Toho Champion Festival.
  • US promotional material for the film unfairly credits Aruther Rakin as the movie's producer and director, citing actual director Ishiro Honda's role as merely the "Japanese director".
