Background and Trivia |
- Toho submitted the movie to the US copyright office on December 27th, 2005. This was under registration number PA0001260498. The titles listed were the international title, Judo Saga, and the Romaji title, Sugata Sanshiro.
- The movie is based off the novel by Tomita Tsuneo, which was already made into a film through director Akira Kurosawa's Sanshiro Sugata (1943) and director Seiichiro Uchikawa's Judo Saga (1965).
- Interestingly, the movie shares an international title with an the earlier adaptation of the story, Judo Saga (1965), and as of 2005 was still Toho's preferred English title. This is abnormal as Toho will often distinguish English titles from each other, even when the Japanese titles are the same. Examples include The Return of Godzilla (1984), just Godzilla in Japanese, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993), which had the original international title of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla before being changed to add the II by 1996.
