Background and Trivia

  • The movie was registered with the US copyright office on September 14th, 1990, by Kindai Eiga Kyokai. It carried the registrastion number of PA0000488756. The title used for the submission was The Island, with The Naked Island and the movie's Romaji title, Hadaka no Shima, used as alternates.
  • Apparently, earlier attempts to copyright the film were seen as insufficent and concerns existed that it had slipped into public domain. However, the Uruguay Round Agreements Act, signed it into law on December 8, 1994, acted to protect movies which had slipped into public domain for a variety of reasons. These could be anything from a failure to renew the copyright after registering it or due to a failure to meet US copyright registration and notification formalities. It's unknown which of these might have been the cause for concern. On December 22nd, 1997, a new copyright registration was made, with the number V8006P602. This noted an intent to enforce copyright restored under the Uruguay Round Agreements Act for the 1960 film. Interestingly enough, the copyright was noted as being owned by Kindai Eiga Kyokai who had asked Toho to submit it for them, under a care of (c/o) citation for Toho.
