Background and Trivia

  • Argos Films and Oshima Productions submitted the movie to the US copyright office on February 8th, 1991 under the registration number PA0000517370. It used the title In the Realm of the Senses, its international title, along with L'Empire des Sens, French title, and Corrida, a shortened Romaji title.
  • Due to the hard core sexual nature of the film, the movie depicts scenes that show unblurred genitals and other things which are not allowed in Japan. As a result, In the Realm of the Senses was heavily edited for its initial Japanese release. The uncut version did not screen in Japan until 14 years afterwards, in 2000. Noted in Cinema Today.
