Background and Trivia

  • Toho submitted the film to the US copyright office on October 22nd, 1982 with the registration number of PA0000164263. The movie was submitted under its international title, The Imperial Navy.
  • A 1/20th scale, 13 meters in size, version of the Yamato Battleship was created for the movie. The production cost for the prop alone was ¥90 million yen. Mentioned in Godzilla: The Large Complete Works (ISBN 406178417X).
  • The Japanese English title for the movie is "The Grand Fleet" with a unique logo that appears on the posters and memorabilia around the film's release. However, when picking an international title Toho opted for The Imperial Navy instead. Interestingly, for more modern memorabilia, the original English logo has been modified to include The Imperial Navy in it. Humorously, the logo itself is the abbreviation GF with the title which stood for Grand Fleet and in the context of the international title being there no longer lines up. This logo with the newer title can be seen on the soundtrack release from Cinema-kan from 2019.
