Worldwide, Gyaos are appearing, causing panic. Meanwhile, a girl called Ayana struggles with day to day life. She is tormented by the memory of Gamera inadvertently killing her parents while fighting a Gyaos. Bullied by her peers, she ends up entering a cursed temple. From inside, a mysterious, tentacled beast appears from an egg-like object. Against the wishes of the temple's guardian, who happens to have a crush on her, Ayana raises the monster and calls it Iris. During this, Gamera appears, fighting a trio of Gyaos above Japan. The Guardian of the Universe is now focused on killing the Gyaos. This causes the death of hundreds of innocent people in the crossfire. Japan is now mobilized, seeing Gamera as a prime threat, while Ayana's growing hatred fuels Iris...

Background and Trivia

  • On ancillary media, such as the soundtrack release by Tokuma, the movie is referred to by a different Japanese English name of GIII: The Guardian of the Universe.
  • A follow up to Gamera 2: Advent of Legion (1996) was not immediately planned, unlike the sequel to the 1995 Gamera movie. This is confirmed as director Shusuke Kaneko was asked about rumors that the third movie would be Gamera against humanity. In response Kaneko stated that a third film wasn't even in a serious phase at the moment. However, given the opportunity, he would like to do a concept similar to this. Noted in G-Fan issue #40.
