During the final week of World War II, a young marching band travels through Manchuria to its new base. En route they reunite with their demoted sergeant, Kosugi, and encounter the flirtatious Oharu. Once at the base, Kosugi learns that a lieutenant he knew was executed for abandoning Fort Graveyard. After confronting Commander Sakuma, Kosugi is imprisoned alongside the rebellious cook Inuyama, pacifist Shiga and mortician Mochida. Oharu convinces Sakuma to free Kosugi on the condition that he lead the young musicians in retaking Fort Graveyard. Kosugi agrees, provided they can bring Inuyama, Shiga and Mochida along. After training the inexperienced band members to fight, the group sets out to retake the fort...

Background and Trivia

  • Toho submitted the film to the US copyright office on December 29th, 1997. The registration number was PA0000517331. The production was submitted with its international title of Fort Graveyard along with its Romaji title, Chi to Suna. The submission was a joint one with Kwaidan (1964), although in the case of the super natural film this was a resubmission for that movie.
