Background and Trivia

  • Akira Kurosawa was working on the script at the time of his passing in 1998. Takashi Koizumi, who was to be an assistant director on the project, ended up completing it using notes left behind and from conversations they had on the concept. Hisao Kurosawa, Akira Kurosawa's son, stated at his father's wake that he wanted Koizumi to direct it as he had been by "[his father's] side for many years". Noted in the book Dreams Are Genius (ISBN: 4163555706).
  • Premiered at the Venice Film Festival on October 25th, 1999. This was in advance of its main release in Japan on January 22nd, 2000.
