Description

Possibly originating from an Antarctic region and blown off its course, the massive Mutant Manta Ray found itself in New York and began searching for a suitable home. It tried housing itself in a penguin exhibit at a zoo, which ended up being far too small to house it, and left the decimated facility with two security guards in critical condition from frost bite. Next, it tried to take shelter at a food processing plant where H.E.A.T. intercepted it. They managed to rescue the workers inside and, thanks in part to Godzilla, drive the flying manta away from the populated area. H.E.A.T. then began to bait the beast into a coliseum using an ice truck. Once inside the chilled enclosure, the temperature was dropped and the mutation was successfully put into hibernation for little over a day.

Unfortunately, just as Major Hicks arrived with the cavalry to relocate it, the generator gave way and the temperature began to rise. The ray awoke and broke free. Guns opened fire, but a single sweep of its freezing breath left all of the military forces, save for Major Hicks, encased in ice.

The monster began to fly away, but H.E.A.T. followed behind with a handful of helicopters. After being hit, the mutation made landfall and, again, was challenged by Godzilla. The titans collided and their breaths met in mid-air. Instantly, the skies darkened and lightning crashed as the breaths generated cold and hot fronts. Knowing the battle had to be taken back out to sea, Nick and Elsie lured the ray and Godzilla away using flares. Unfortunately, before the flying behemoth could be taken too far away, the flare gun jammed. It was about to freeze the small raft carrying Nick and Elsie until Godzilla burst from the water and grabbed the manta ray, dragging it into the depths. Before it could escape, the King of the Monsters began to swim circles around it at high speeds. A whirlpool was formed and pulled the ray to the bottom of the abyss, leaving its fate unknown.

Powers / Weapons
Ice breath

Ice breath

From its mouth, the Mutant Manta Ray can launch a stream of icy air so cold it can flash freeze whatever it hits, including humans. Those frozen are capable of surviving thanks to the speed in which this process works. When this breath was struck by Godzilla’s atomic fire, the vastly different temperatures generated an intense thunderstorm that also formed numerous waterspouts.

Flight

Flight

Unlike natural rays, this mutation developed the ability to fly through the air as if a bird, using its large fins as wings.

Background and Trivia
  • In the script for its debut episode, the part was originally intended for a giant bird monster called the "Bird of Prey" to antagonize Godzilla and H.E.A.T. However, as episodes went into production, the show's producers opted to swap out the giant bird for a giant manta ray instead, as several episodes in the series already revolved around other bird monsters. The mention of this change can be found in an article by SciFi Japan.
  • Curiously, in Godzilla 1954-1999 Super Complete Works (ISBN 4091014704), it is referred to in Japanese as the episode's scrapped monster, "Bird of Prey" (バード・オブ・プレイ - Bado Obu Purei).
