Description

Driven to the brink and at a loss of two men, Artemis and the rest of Bravo Team were holed up in a hollow cavern etched into the cliff face. With the Black Diablos lurking nearby and unable to move, Artemis’ team remained there overnight and tried to get themselves situated with the spontaneous events of recent memory. However, Artemis was the first to fall victim to the grappling might of a Nerscylla, who injected her with tranquilizer toxins that put her to sleep.

Though Bravo Team retaliated with gunfire, this did little more than repel the enlarged temnoceran and attracted more to the area. The cave was swarmed by an endless wave of the arachnoids, who pursued the survivors to their wits end. The Hunter, who had taken refuge after being thrown overboard, tried to help by blasting the Nerscylla with explosive-tipped arrows, only to be noticed by the horde and chased back to his makeshift enclosure. Left defenseless, the remainder of Bravo Team were offed one by one and dragged back to their lair.

Upon awakening, Artemis tore free from the fleshy cocoon that bound her and found her crew dead and consumed. Collecting whatever supplies she could, Artemis navigated through the complex catacombs of the Nerscylla nest, using flares to light the way. She stumbled across Lincoln, who had also escaped and was struggling to move, where they continued until they found a potential exit.

NerscyllaHowever, an adult Nerscylla blocked the path, with only the flare keeping it away. Unable to cope with the numbing pain, tearing Link’s clothes revealed Nerscylla eggs buried and bound to his skin, hatching and crawling all over him. Insistent that Artemis go ahead without him, he was snagged and fed to the juvenile Nerscylla. In retaliation, Artemis pulled out a can of breathable oxygen and used it as a makeshift flamethrower in order to clear a path.

Artemis hurried to the narrow hole, nearly dragged back by its large pincers. Fortunately, thanks to intuition and a round of bullets sparking from the flames, she was able to climb out of the den and panicked if she too had been impregnated. Lucky for her, that was not the case. Left time to grieve for her fallen comrades, the Nerscylla could only watch from a distance, kept at bay due to natural sunlight.

She eventually found herself captured by a Hunter, who took her back to his living quarters. Though neither of them got along, it was better to be silent than to provoke the nighttime scrapings of the Nerscylla, who tried to dig through the massive rock formation. Upon her escape, Artemis confronted the Hunter until their skirmish nearly resulted in him falling into the pit, only to be saved at the last moment. Opting to work together in order to get to the Sky Tower, the two concoct a plan to take down the Black Diablos that lurked nearby. They just had to set it up before the sun fell into the horizon...

Used as bait to draw them out, Artemis lured a Nerscylla into a trap where the Hunter slashed its face open and amputated the stinger, hauling it back to craft into a weapon. Waiting out the aggressive swarm in their rocky den, the Hunter crafted an arrow made from the venom glands of the Nerscylla, hoping to poison and slay the fortitudinous Black Diablos. Once the black horned wyvern was brought down, they were able to venture into the desert--resuming their perilous journey to the Sky Tower.

Powers / Weapons
Tranquilizer venom

Tranquilizer venom

Through the tipped stinger, a Nerscylla injects prey with a tranquilizer that induces temporary sleep. The pheromones emitted alert other Nerscylla of a subdued target to bring back to the nest, though they will often evade the comatose prey until it has been wrapped in webbing.

While able to control the strength of the injection, the venom of a Nerscylla is capable of rendering a Diablos momentarily drowsy.

Sticky webbing

Sticky webbing

Highly tensile and adhesive, the stinger tip of the Nerscylla can secret webbing that binds prey to reel them in. In addition, the web can be used to cocoon and store future meals and construct massive catacombs beneath the surface.

Weaknesses
Light aversion

Light aversion

The Nerscylla are sensitive to tremendous amounts of light, seeking to avoid being in broad daylight or skittish in the presence of an ignited flare.

Background and Trivia
  • According to the movie's Japanese brochure, Nerscylla may wear the outer skin of a monster like a cape to protect itself from its light weakness. Crystalized venom extends from its backside like large needles.
  • Its height can be found on a "monster size chart" featured in the movie's Japanese brochure, though some online promotional material rounds it down to 3 meters.
