Description

An ancient creature secretly tied to a lost society, the Rathalos that served to vanguard the Sky Tower was unlike any other member of the species. Boasting an enormous size, this enlarged Rathalos was nothing short of a force to be reckoned with. Even after the fall of the Ancients, Rathalos continued its duty and soared the skies, bringing its wrath down on others who dared to cross its path.

Over time, it reigned destruction and took the lives of innocents in the process. Then, one day, Rathalos invaded and attacked military personnel and engaged in combat. Alpha Team tried to fight against the vicious dragon, only to meet their inevitable demise when they were chased into the vast desert of the New World. Met by its superheated flames, they were left as burnt, hollow husks of what they once were. With the pests dealt with, Rathalos continued to survey the continent from the skies. Such remains were later found by Bravo Team, who investigated the aftermath of such brutality.

After Bravo Team’s quick and sudden demise, leaving only its captain as the sole survivor, Rathalos didn’t show activity until the defeat of the Black Diablos that roamed the sandy desert. Unleashing a stream of fire upon the lush desert forest, it sent a herd of Apceros stampeding in a frenzy, burning them alive and free falling over a cliff. Fortunately for Captain Artemis and her Hunter comrade, the latter who had lost his family to Rathalos, they were saved by the Hunter’s Guild at the last moment. They recouped and planned to stop the Sky Tower and take down the Rathalos that protected it, preventing a potential catastrophe that would befall the two worlds if left unchecked.

Sensing the presence of the group of the Guild’s finest experts, the greater Rathalos made its presence known. Flying within the midst of torrential rainfall, a fiery display made short work of some of the Guild’s members. Then, perching atop the structures that led to the tower, Rathalos screeched a vicious challenge to those that threatened the Sky Tower. The Admiral was the first to catch its attention with the imbued elemental power of his weapon, only for the flying wyvern to retaliate in kind with tremendous flames.

Greater RathalosMeeting them on the ground, Artemis and the Guilde charged straight to Rathalos, assaulting the mighty dragon with a privy of explosive arrows, grappling hooks, and elemental blades. But it seemed that the fire demon possessed the advantage, crushing and swatting the puny pests with little issue. All the while, the raging storm empowered the obelisks to gestate portals, slowly becoming more and more stable with each passing moment. In a bold effort, Artemis tried to shove her electrified blades into the wyvern’s mouth, attempting to prematurely ignite the flammable gas and take out the monstrous reptile. Yet in a swift strike, Rathalos batted her away with a slap of its wing, hurling her close to a nearby cliff. Chasing her down, Rathalos began cultivating a brewing flame to finish her off.

In order to escape her fiery fate, Artemis took the risk and leapt over the edge, evading the scorching wrath of the fearsome Rathalos. Caught in a fabricated portal, she fell through and found herself back on Earth, where she was retrieved by US personnel. However, the Rathalos was quick to pursue, ripping through a tear in reality and clamped its jaws around the Osprey that housed her. Tearing it asunder, Rathalos continued unimposed as the nearby US forces tried to take it down, only to be met in a flaming demise.

Gathering what little she could from the wreckage, Artemis armed herself with flares and her armory and charged straight into battle. Hooking herself onto its wing, she plunged her blade into the wing as she trailed down, only to lose her grip and shaken off with little effort.

Keeping distance between her and the beast, Artemis ignited a flare with a nearby fire and launched it into the mouth of the dragon. Causing a reaction between the heat and the gas, subsequent explosions tore the mighty dragon apart, leaving nasty burns in their place. The mammoth reptile collapsed in a brief moment of levity, hoping this was the end of it. That was until it rose from the dead, prepared to crush her with its jaws.

Saving at the last moment, the Hunter bombarded the wicked wyvern with a series of explosive rounds, puncturing the weakened armor and tearing through its defenses. With an open tear in the neck, which leaked with the combustible gases, the Hunter was finally able to avenge his lost family by launching the arrow at the neck. In a cavalcade of explosive bursts, the Rathalos finally took its last breath and perished, leaving little more than a burning corpse.

Though the celebration was brief, the threat of the Sky Tower loomed. And the fight was far from over, for this was just the beginning of an event like no other...

Powers / Weapons
Flight

Flight

With powerful and spiked wings, Rathalos is able to take to the air, often feared as the “King of the Skies.” Its flight speed is unknown.

Incendiary breath

Incendiary breath

Ignited by flammable gases spewed from its mouth, the greater Rathalos is able to produce a sweltering wave of condensed fire that torches all in its path. Alternatively, these bursts of fire can be concentrated into fireballs, a staple weapon for the Rathalos.

Unused

Poison claws

A common trait among lesser members, the greater Rathalos may have had the potential to inflict deadly toxins into its targets with talons. However, this ability goes unused during the events that transpire in the movie.

Weaknesses
Charging mouth gas

Charging mouth gas

Before Rathalos can unleash its powerful flames, it briefly spews streams of flammable gas within its maw to kickstart its flame. However, this charging time can be exploited by using a superheated weapon to prematurely combust the gases before the flying wyvern can fire. This tactic will inflict major damage to the monster both internally and externally, although Rathalos is capable of surviving such a seemingly fatal counterattack.

Background and Trivia
  • During a panel held at New York Comic-Con 2020 for Monster Hunter (2021), director Paul W.S. Anderson explained the size discrepancy between the movie Rathalos and the game version: "We joked that we kind of fed [the Rathalos] GMOs. It's a bigger version of the Rathalos than you would see in the games. The reason for that is that it's associated with this ancient civilization [...] There's a kind of secret associated with this Greater Rathalos." His original excerpt can be found in a 2020 article shared by Screen Rant.
  • The Japanese spelling of its name can be found in the official movie brochure released during the movie's theatrical run in Japan. It also refers to Rathalos as being "king of the sky" (空の王者 - Sora no oja).
  • Its height was listed on online promotional material released for the movie.
