Description

Floating along the outer reaches of Earth's atmosphere, a celestial space cell bathed in the nourishing energy of several small pockets of radiation. Eventually the cells mutated, due to exposure from strontium and cobalt. However, the existence of the mutated cells had gone unnoticed for some time, although reports were coming in of missing satellites. While investing, the Electric Wave Laboratory discoverd the culprit, as the nebula creature destroyed their L100 television satellite. Following the attack, the mutated space cell forced itself down to Earth.

While on the planet, the newly created monster Dogora found a new source of food. Over the next few days, mysterious heists of diamonds occured on a global scale. New York, London, Paris, Rome, Rio and other locations were hit with diamonds missing. Eventually the situation lands in Tokyo, with missing jewels that causes the police department to investigate. Each instance proved to be more perplexing than the last. One of the events had a two foot thick, stainless steel safe door melted through like wax. In another incident, a witness reported an armored car floating in the air, before it was dropped and smashed.

After another incident, involving the destruction and theft of a few hundred tons of coal at a factory, detective Komai meet with Professor Munakata as the doctor made a startling conclusion. All the robberies involved diamonds and coal, both of which have a very strong carbon based structure. The fear was that the creatures could expand to consume other things containing carbon, including humans. With the risk realized, the meeting was interrupted by rocks floating in the nearby garden. Shortly after, smashing through one of the scientists' windows, a Dogora space cell attached itself to a safe door. The metal was burned through with little effort, and the creatures fed on the synthetic diamonds that the professor had created.

Witnessing the horror first hand, together the professor and the detective inform the military. In response, they stage defense grids around the nearby coal plants in Kyushu. Two days pass before the air sirens blare through the sky. However, as the AA guns geared up for war, it was discovered through directional microphones that the intruder was a huge swarm of bees. The military was puzzled, wondering why bees would be flying at an altitude of 26,000 feet. A P2V-7 Neptune plane was dispatched for reconnaissance. In the sky, they witnessed the horde of insects as they dove into the surrounding clouds, as dozens of car sized boulders plummeted earthward. The hail of brightly colored rocks fell from the clouds, smashing nearby homes and businesses.

Night arrived soon, as Professor Munakata continued to study the peculiar crystallized rocks that fell from the sky. Yet, his research was cut short: once again the air sirens screamed their warning. Dogora had been sighted over Dokaiwan Bay. Humanity in northern Kyushu ran for cover while the jellyfish-like horror, taking a more physical form now, drifted down from the heavens. The surrounding 155mm Howitzer M2 guns and defense line opened fire upon the intruder. Unfortunately, the weapons had little effect. Dogora continued unopposed against the city, as it sucked up the mounds of coal. It wasn't until after the space squid leveled the Wakato Bridge did the military finally stop the demon. Launching a few waves of Surface-to-Air Missiles against Dogora, the monster was blown to bits. Unfortunately for mankind, the pieces each were able to live as individual cells. Each sparkling orb contained the potential to mature to another immense tentacle beast.

Sadly, their reign of terror had just started. Worldwide, humanity was thrown into chaos, as the creatures targeted Zarl Mine, King Valley Mine and oil fields in the Middle East. More days passed before the glowing nimbus of shimmering children attacked once more inside Japan to feed. Consuming the piles of carbon rich coal, the floating creatures had no idea of what was about to befall them. The Japanese military had already staged for a final standoff with the alien life forms. Thanks to the professor's work on the crystallized rocks, a weakness had been discovered. As it turned out, bee and wasp venom was utterly deadly to the Dogora entity. The rocks were merely deceased space cells, due to contact with the venom. With this information, the armed forces dropped aerial canisters of liquid venom from Sikorsky H-19 helicopters. They also equipped mobile towers, called Spray Tanks, with exhaust containers of the same yellow gas. Together the combined tactics overpowered the Dogora cells. The venom turned them all into crystallized rocks, ending their reign of destruction.

Powers / Weapons
Flight

Flight

Once in the Earth's atmosphere, the monster was able to levitate in the air. This includes both in its larger and small, cell-like form. In fact, the creature only was seen landing to use its special energy touch to burn through safes, doors and other things that impended its access to carbon.

special Energy Touch

special Energy Touch

The Dogora were able to conduct a special energy through their touch. This had a corrosive-like effect when it came into contact with objects, able to melt away safe steel doors.

Tentacles

Tentacles

When in a larger state, each Dogora possesed four long tentacles that drooped from its body. Although often just dangling, these could spring into action to grasp objects. In fact, the space creature used all four at the same time to uproot and lift the Wakato Bridge.

Space Travel

Space Travel

Dogora was first discovered in outer space, where it was attacking satellites. The cellular monster then traveled down to Earth, in search of carbon to consume.

Vacuum

Vacuum

The mutated creature had almost an telekentic-like vacuum ability that enabled it to suck up objects or levitate them. In fact, this could be used when objects were far below it, allowing it to stay at a safe altitude.

This power could be used with surprising percision, as the creature was able to lift just a few rocks in Professor Munakata's garden. However, this wasn't always the case, as the monster did occasionally suck up vehicles during its frenzy to feed on coal.

Cell Fission

Cell Fission

As the space monster consumed carbon, it also eventually changed into a larger form. This, however, made it a more tangeable target for the self-defense forces of Japan, who blasted it with Surface-to-Air Missiles.

However, Dogora proved able to survive this attack on a cellular level and commenced cell fission: starting to replicate itself to increase its strength and continued its worldwide siege.

Weaknesses
Venom

Venom

Dogora was very susceptible to venom, with expsoure to toxins causing its body to harden into a multi-colored rock-like substance.

The self defense discovered this weakness and utilized it to end the threat through using bee and wasp venom. It's unknown, but possible, that other venom would have had a lethal effect on them as well. Chemically, bee and wasp venom is quite different from each other. Both are complicated mixtures of chemicals, but do both contain hyaluronidase. This breaks down the barrier between cells, which allows the venom to spread. If this was the key to killing the Dogora, than other forms of venom, like from snakes or spiders, might also have been effective as they too contain hyaluronidase.

Background and Trivia
  • Was adapted from the titular creatures in the scrapped project Space Mons. Originally, these creatures were born from the Van Allen radiation belt and were invisible throughout the movie. This aspect was changed to an actual appearance while a weakness to venom was added. It's unknown if their origin, being born from the Van Allen radiation belt, was the same though.
  • Dogora's size is mentioned as "Micro" to "Infinitie" in The Giant Picture Encyclopedia of Godzilla: Toho Special Effects Movie World (ISBN: 4873765587), while its mass is listed as "Uncertain". That said, the creature became quite large in the movie. The bridge it lifted with its tentacles, the Wakato Bridge, had a span of 367 meters.
  • In the 2000 publication The Giant Picture Encyclopedia of Godzilla: Toho Special Effects Movie World (ISBN: 4873765587), Dogora's powers are listed as "Special Energy Touch" (触覚からの特殊エネルギー - Shokkaku Kara no Tokushu Enerugi) and "Tentacles" (触手 - Shokushu).
