Best Explosions in a Toho Film

Post by rytheman »

Name says it all. What are the best explosions Toho turned out? My favorite is a toss up between the mass destruction caused by MechaGodzilla eye beams in Terror of Mechagodzilla, and the Atomic Bomb sequence in The Last War.

The highway explosion in The Prophecies of Nostradamus, no contest. It's just so random and spectacular.

That actually leads to the same scene from Nostradamus, which was reused as stock footage for Godzilla 1984. Before I even read the thread though, I knew my answer would be Mechagodzilla's attack in Terror of Mechagodzilla. Glad to see so many other people loved that as well.

Which for the most part was stock footage from The Last War.

Probably in the Showa series MG's all out assualt on Godzilla, the scene where Godzilla annialates the guy who saved Godzillasaurus in the 1940s from gxKG, giving some semtimental value to the scene, and GmK Godzilla's blowing up of KG, leaving millions of pieces of the guy all over Tokyo Bay.

Now, if we're including the distributed films... the explosion of Iris was one of the most awesome explosions ever.

Otherwise? I would actually say the explosion of Baragon in GMK.

Don't worry. Distributed films count as well.

I've yet to see SUBMERSION OF JAPAN (73'), which I'm sure has a ton of good stuff.

My current list (no order)

-Destruction of the underground base in MECHAGODZILLA (74')
-Mechagodzilla's "all out attack" on Tokyo in TERROR OF MECHAGODZILLA
-The final sequence of THE LAST WAR
-Letchi Island's destruction in SEA MONSTER
-The highway sequence in NOSTRADAMUS, as well as the edited version used in RETURN OF GODZILLA
-Godzilla's landing in Tokyo Bay in RETURN OF GODZILLA
-Destruction of the Super X-II in BIOLLANTE
-Godzilla's spiral ray in MECHAGODZILLA (93') & SPACEGODZILLA
-Meltdown Godzilla's spiral beam vs. Destoroyah
-Godzilla's ray owning the JSDF in GMK

Another one that comes to mind is the bridge explosion that destroys Mogera in The Mysterians.

Terror of Mechagodzilla IMO has the greatest explosions of any Showa film.

This was monumental. But my vote goes to Mechagodzilla's beam barrage in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.

I like the explosions along the shoreline of Hong Kong that Godzilla makes right before the title sequence in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.

My favorite has to be during the fight at that refinery or whatever the hell it was when Godzilla vs Fake (MechaGodzilla) Godzilla... that explosion is just monstrous.

The all out attack of (GvMG) MG 1 on Godzilla is one of my all time favorite scenes...

But watching (ToMG) Mechagodzilla level Tokyo is utterly awesome... just some gorgeous stuff going on there.

but one of the all time bests and the one that has to take the cake is the volcanic underwater explosion in Latitude Zero that lances the surface and lighting bolts are interlaced with it... pretty damn cool looking

Nakanao really is deserving of his nickname of "Mr. Explosion" The stuff he did in the 70's still holds up really well, especially all the explosive effects in the two Mechagodzilla films.

Godzilla vs. Destroyah. Those fireballs are glorious and seeing the demonic looking Destroyah and Meltdown Godzilla surrounded by plumes of fire makes for great atmosphere.
