I had to send a memo out to the roster of eight people coming to see it with me that we were changing locations because the theater I originally picked doesn't have a proper IMAX display. Unfortunately the closest 1.43:1 screen is 3hrs away, but the next best thing is 1.9:1 and that's only an hour and a half. Now you're telling me I gotta find one with Dolby, too? FuckLeunames wrote: ↑Mon Sep 28, 2026 6:15 pm For those who are looking into theater format options to watch this film in. The world premiere was in an auditorium that had full Dolby Atmos and that made everything so much more visceral. Obviously this is meant to be seen in Imax, but if you don't have an imax near you, you must make all efforts to at least see it in a Dolby equipped theater. The sound mixing is fantastic.

If Toho means that any and all scenes that have havoc and destruction in it (I.e. non dialogue-only scenes) are filmed using 1.43:1, then I mean, try and make it a road trip or something. There's very little "filler action"ClandestineCanine9 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2026 3:47 amI had to send a memo out to the roster of eight people coming to see it with me that we were changing locations because the theater I originally picked doesn't have a proper IMAX display. If they mean only certain, choice, specific sequences are 1.43:1, then maybe it's not worth the 3 hours drive.
But you better make damn sure dolby is the absolute minimum you can do if you can't pull off 1.43:1.
Personally I'm going to see it again at release a few blocks away from the world premiere auditorium because that's just my local imax theater (and incidentally, the country's largest 70mm imax screen). If I didn't have that easy access, and having already seen the movie, I * would* make a 3 hour trip to a full 1.43:1 screen without knowing how much is actually in that ratio, because the world premiere had dolby Atmos but not 1.43:1 imax. So no one in the world aside from Toho executives has actually seen the movie yet in the way/format that they fully intend.
But no way would I be able to convince 8 people to come with me lol

Oh I absolutely would too, but aside from the 8 people accompanying me, current gas prices are also a factor. We will be carpooling as much as possible, but there will still be at least 3 vehicles making the trip. 5 of the 8 people making the drive are college students working part-time at best.
Unless something changes in the next month (which I doubt), I am definitely avoiding a 6hr+ round trip. We've already got post-movie dinner plans, and I intend on viewing the nearest early access screening on 11/3 by myself in addition to the group trip to the IMAX theater on 11/6.

Then probably go for 1.90 or dolby with your unit. If you yourself personally like it a lot, see it again in 1.43. that's probably the best of both worldsClandestineCanine9 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2026 6:51 amOh I absolutely would too, but aside from the 8 people accompanying me, current gas prices are also a factor. Re: Godzilla Minus Zero News and Discussion
Honestly, I wondered if Yamazaki could pull off the same trick again. Minus One was an unapologetically Japanese Godzilla movie that broke through with western audiences and I wondered if he could thread that needle again? Maybe it was a fluke? (not to say anything about the quality of the movie, just the public reaction)
Well, after the incredible first reactions whatever doubts I had have been dispelled. I'm gonna try to avoid too many spoilers and try not to over-familiarize myself with the film before release (honestly, a bigger problem than simple spoilers).
Instead of stewing in coverage I'll watch some thematically appropriate Godzilla films.

Hmm I don't know about -1 being unapologetically Japanese to be frank. The movie cribs so much from Steven Spielberg. The western stylings and centering the film on a personal journey rather than an ensemble cast like most other Godzilla movies gave it a very approachable American flavor. That's likely why it was such a big hit to begin with, it's a great popcorner (complimentary!) in the vein of an Abrams or Krasinski picture.Angilasman wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2026 2:29 pm Honestly, I wondered if Yamazaki could pull off the same trick again. Well, yeah; it's couched in that the same way that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was a straight‐up classical wuxia with all the tropes associated but it was also a historical romance filmed in gorgeous locations (a popular Hollywood genre in the '90s). Minus One reminds me of a Hollywood crowd pleaser that Hollywood has almost forgotten how to make, but it's also a classical Godzilla/Toho genre film through‐and-through.Yumiyoshi wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2026 8:52 pm

Ooooh, Fandango lists an early IMAX screening of Minus Zero on Nov 3! Tickets not available for purchase yet, but I'll be keeping an eye on when they're officially available!

I'm waiting on pins and needles for the tickets to drop. If I were to bet I'd say next Thursday, as the final trailer is set to drop with the re-release of Minus One in Japan.

Audience Member:"What are your thoughts on the Godzilla gijinkas?"
Michael Dougherty:"............I have no idea what that is. Next question."
(Yes, this actually happened)

Hopefully, getting IMAX tickets for this won't be as difficult as getting them for Dune

Hopefully they do IMAX and XD (Infinity vision) for for the fan event. The IMAX screen near me, the Theatre is a dump.Angilasman wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2026 1:29 pm Ooooh, Fandango lists an early IMAX screening of Minus Zero on Nov 3! Re: Godzilla Minus Zero News and Discussion
After having finally seen a film in Imax I honestly don't get what the big deal is. Felt like I was watching a movie on any other theater screen.

I only sought out IMax cause it had the best picture/sound quality of any screen in my state. Every other theater is hot garbage.

IMAX is fine, but it’s not the end all be all.
I would like to check out a Dolby screen….i hear it’s a better experience.

I don't have to worry about any of that. No theaters in reasonable proximity to me have such features or accommodations.

Yeah, I lived in West Virginia for a little while in the mid-2000s. Did you guys ever get a second Walmart? There was literally one in the whole state back then, and not even a Supercenter.Showa Gyaos wrote: ↑Sun Oct 04, 2026 8:15 am I don't have to worry about any of that. It's a kind of primitive isolation that boggles most Americans' minds. Things you can find everywhere just... don't exist in the Mountain State. But at least you have pepperoni rolls.

The world's only Mothman Museum, even!
