All Monsters Attack was irredeemable garbage.

If modern day general sensus is anything to go by, this opinion of the film really did not change.

I think that is highly dependent on the community in question.

More than that I think it's dependent on who's surveyed in any given community.

I'm not sure how it could be considered any sort of version of Son of Godzilla, good or bad, except if one's mostly focused on the monster cast (and lifted footage from SoG). They are totally different movies tonally, structurally, narratively... Anyway, if you're going to praise or criticize a work, isn't it more honest to do so on its own flaws and merits, and not how it stacks up against another movie?

I’ll agree with AMA being irredeemable trash, and while I try really fucking hard to accept all opinions, I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would like this movie. Is it because Honda’s name is attached to it? Is it an excuse to “not be like those other fans”?

If you think certain fans only like this is for illegitimate and deceitful reasons then I'm not sure there's any good reason to engage you in discussion about why some of us actually do. Are you truly interested in hearing other opinions or would you rather just continue to preemptively write them off?

Seriously, I'd like to know before I waste my time typing up a response you'll ignore or brush off.

I mean no disrespect, but could it be that you can't fathom why some like the movie in part because you're only interested in the monster scenes (as I believe you've said)? This is definitely the least compelling Godzilla movie for that type of fan.

You know, I used to dislike All Monsters Attack. Like, a lot. It really wasn’t until this year I decided to give it a rewatch. I was pleasantly surprised on how much I liked it. It’s just so different from any of the other Godzilla films. The best I can compare it to is Wes Craven’s New Nightmare in way due to how meta it sort of is. It isn’t really a Godzilla story. I find Ichiro to be very likable, and has a better character than the kids in Godzilla vs Hedorah and Godzilla vs. Megalon. I am however really bothered by the ending still. Other than that, it’s a fine movie. Not great, but an decent movie in my eyes.

I don't like Godzilla's Revenge, but I don't care much about it one way or the other in the grand scheme of things either. I honestly forget it exists sometimes – no point in wasting any ill will towards the movie.

And, look, push comes to shove, I'll watch it before both the anime trilogy and several Showa Gamera flicks, so there's that.

I used to hate it when I was younger but as I've got older I see more of what it was trying to do. But for me it's still not a great film. I still rank it in my bottom tier. But its not at the rock bottom like it used to be.

AMA will always be the perfect so bad it's good movie via Ichiro being a large ham and introducing the almighty god that is Lord Gabara.

Other than Gabara’s roar making me want to put a bullet in my head I don’t mind AMA as much as I used to. I’d watch it over say, Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla or Tokyo SOS.

On the topic of Gabara's roar, I'll come out and say it. Titanosaurus' cackle is the most annoying sound any Kaiju has ever had in the series and it made me glad Godzilla blasted him to finally shut him up. Even if objectively Titansaurus is the victim in that film.

Rebirth of Mothra series, flawed as it is, has some of the better fight scenes in the Heisei era even if not actually part of the Heisei canon. Desghidorah vs. Mothra & Mothra Leo and Cretaceous King Ghidorah vs. Mothra Leo are amazing clashes.

Undercut maybe by having absolute curb stomps at the end of every movie? Perhaps but doesn't take away from the action as when it was good it was damn good.

Regarding AMA, I've always liked how "lowkey" and meta it is. Yes, it's nice that Ishiro Honda directed it, but I feel like the film has this honest sturdiness to it. Take the ending however you will, I just think it's interesting to see a kid trying to escape reality with giant monsters. It's not like he dreams them up in front of him, he straight up goes to their place - Monster Island. It's silly, goofy, weird, but it knows what it is trying to do.

Mileage will vary to every G-Fan on how well it succeeds in that. For me, at this point in my toku journey, it's tame compared to the wackiest parts of the Showa Ultra series. Due to being apart of Godzilla, the more absurd things pop out more.

Agreed. Heck, it even manages to sound kind of intimidating at times.
