KOTM Theater Experience

Postby LSD Jellyfish » Fri May 31, 2019 8:27 pm

Hey I recall similar threads close to around the time that G14 and Shin came out. What are your experiences with seeing KOTM? IMAX, regular; with friends or family? Anything unique about the experience?

I saw KOTM last night at a Toho Theater in Kofu Yamanashi. There were definitely some hardcore Godzilla fans there, and overall it was a nice experience. What’s cool though, is that since the theater chain is owned by Toho, they had a ton of Godzilla merch, including all the new Bandai figures. After seeing the fi I bought the new KOTM Godzilla Bandai figure (what a fantastic figure) and completed my set. I also bought a Godzilla mug with shin on it, a small King Ghidorah keychain, another steel mug with KOTM monsters on it, some socks and a awesome Ghidorah Hokusai folder. Yeah I sold out!

I awkwardly talked to some Godzilla fans in the merch line, a few of them really liked it but similar to many people on this site they had some problems with it. I also did something really cringey when talking to one of the fans, who was just in line and hadn’t seen it yet. “SHHHH ITS A SECRET, TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY ITS OUT.”

Oh well, some cringe is always fine.

My audience hated it, left the theater during the End Credits saying it was dumb, they didn't even stay long enough to see the Godzilla vs Kong set up. I think there was only 3 other people besides me who liked it and stayed for the after credits stinger/sequel bait.

Awful.

Two rows behind us were a group of obnoxious teenagers giggling and making all kinds of disruptive noise throughout. Their dipshit parents were sitting separate throughout the theater.

A guy in the very first row was trying to record the movie on his phone and one of the ushers had to come in with a cop to escort him out.

Eventually, a guy sitting behind me went to complain about the stupid kids and the cop basically told them to shut the skreeonk up or get the skreeonk out. They were either quiet after that or were booted but I didn't bother to look, I was too focused on the movie.

Unfortunately, all these distractions probably affected my enjoyment of the film. I'm gonna try to sneak in an IMAX showing before it's run ends.

I know you didn’t want to make a scene but you legitimately deserved a free pass for stuff like that. It’s inexcusable behavior for adults to ruin movies for others. Especially with tickets being so expensive

I’ve been blessed to only have this happen a few times

Honestly, while Pacific Rim, Shin Godzilla, RWBY season 3, and DBS: The Broly movie were my best movie going experiences, I was not in the mood to deal with other people (good or bad) and that's why I went to a 4 PM showing. Didn't care people left mumbling it was dumb, just wanted to see it with no interruption during the film, which there weren't any.

Though weirdly there was a little girl staring at me instead of the 3 headed dragon on screen.

I already kinda do get weekly passes anyway since I work at that specific theater, lol.

If I had more time I’d sneak in a morning show on Tuesdays but oh well. Maybe next weekend if I’m not working.

1. To my amazement, I want to strongly urge anybody who hasn't seen this yet to NOT see it in IMAX like I did. Due to the ridiculous camera work, your eyes will be better served by seeing it on a run-of-the-mill screen.

2. The crowd was thoroughly indifferent to the film. Nobody cheered, nobody clapped. Not a single "hell yeah!" for moments that were clearly begging for one. Nobody laughed at any of the stupid jokes. They just seemed bored, as if they wondered why they were there. There were a scattered couple of audible groans when Vera Farmiga
Spoiler:
said "Long live the king" with the Orca or whatever the hell it was right before she died.
Other than that, the only person in the theater who interacted with the movie was me, when I occasionally laughed at how insulting to the audience some of the scenes were.

3. My date, who is not a Godzilla fan, absolutely hated it.

Other than that, a dry, clinical experience, much like the film itself.

Wow I’m surprised, I guess I’m the only one thf had a fun time :(
poop like this makes me really happy how non reactionary Japanese audiences are; would prefer complete silence then the majority of what has been described here.

Man, you guys got it rough.

My theater was super into it. Whenever Godzilla arrives to fight, there was an applause. When the moments got serious, it went quiet. Mothra got plenty of applause too. The mid credit stinger ESPECIALLY got people excited. They were just loving every bit of the movie.
Reignited... and hopefully less weird this time around.

Had a great time. Here in Australia audiences are mostly respectfully quiet and they don't often cheer or shout or whatever, regardless of what movie. I had a blast in my seat just watching but I had to like restrain myself from getting too giddy because I didn't want to disturb anybody else. The guys to my left sounded like they had a good time. Everyone jumped though in the beginning when Godzilla jumpscared Castle Bravo.

Saw it in IMAX. Freaking amazing experience. I think the movie was slightly underwhelming as well, but damn if it isn’t a great eye candy film for the biggest screen you can find.

My theater wasn’t as into it as 2014 but people still laughed at the jokes and stayed for the credits.

Also they started playing Aladdin and then they changed it when people complained.
anyway, yeah, macaroni.

Completely unrelated but in prep for KOTM I rewatched G14, and finally got that your name is a really obscure reference. Just wanted to say you have one of the best and obscure usernames.

I live in Manhattan so I saw it at noon in IMAX at Lincoln Center and around five in Times Square with my girlfriend. The noon showing was maybe 90-95% filled, and the crowd seemed to enjoy it. They laughed and cheered at the expected moments, some collective aw yeahs.

The 5:15 showing later was even more into the film and everyone was enjoying it. The theater was also just as filled. I would say just about everyone stayed seated throughout both credits in both showings. I think the audience reactions were better here than when I saw 2014, and arguably there were more people in both showings this year compared to five years ago.

I've seen it three times now with three different audiences and all of them loved it.

The first time I saw it was the early screening last week and that audience applauded as the credits rolled and I heard people talking as we walked out: "That movie was dope!" "That was so much fun!" and other little quips like that.

The 2nd time I saw it was opening night and that audience I was with reacted to every cool thing in the movie. Mothra seemed to get a lot of love from that crowd as well as they cheered pretty much every time she was on screen. Loud applause all the way through.

Last night, I saw it with my sister who is not a Godzilla fan like I am. She is familiar with it having watched me watch these movies for so long, but she's not a die hard fan like us, and she LOVED it. As the credits rolled, she turned to me and said "F*** the critics. They're wrong!". Now the audience we were with was scarce since it was both A) An 11PM show and we decided to be night owls and B) A screening at a theater that isn't necessarily run down but has been losing business lately, But we still had a blast. There were a few scenes where she turned to me and either gave me a thumbs up or where she was shocked and looked it me like "I can't believe that just happened!".

My theater experiences have been very positive.

I saw it Thursday night during the preview showing. Theater was pretty bare, although these were the more expensive XD tickets.

General reaction was very muted. Only thing that got a reaction was a few people murmured the first time the Godzilla theme was audible and not being drowned out.

Saw it twice on Friday; once at 7PM and once at 11. The 7PM showing was pretty full, though it was a pretty small theater because it was in the middle of a built-up city area. 11:00 showing was pretty bare, although that's not too surprising. Don't recall much of a reaction from the audience, although when I bolted out of the first showing as soon as the credits started, I heard some guy sitting behind me say "alright, guess he's had enough."
In my opinion, of course.

I saw somebody a few rows down who looked like they were thinking about it after the bowing scene, but looked around and put their hands back on their lap. Lol.

Worst experience. 400 + pound guy sit next to me. Smells like my sox after an afternoon of basketball. Breathes heavily through the whole movie.

Two guys in front of me almost get into a fight. One guy tells the other to stop talking because hes talking as the movie starts. The other guy gets PISSED and tries to fight the other guy. His wife holds him back. He kept on threatening the guy through the whole Emma/Madison kitchen scene. Even after the movie he threatens him again. Unreal.

In terms of Godzilla related stuff my audience was pretty hyped up and cheered several things. 7:15pm showing IMAX on Thurs night so a lot of the die hards.
